I'm not saying it's a bad song. I'm saying it's not as good as everyone thinks it is, thus ... overrated.

I think this whole concept of judging PJ songs in a harsh manner is a bit overdone. The fact is, we're all crazy fanatics, we've all listened to every album hundreds if not thousands of times, and while we may skip a track or two here and there, we ALWAYS revisit those tracks later on. This is really just a recent epiphany for me; from the time Avacado came out, I have fucking hated Parachutes. Like a real, seething, deep dislike. But after purchasing and listening to the Vic show, and hearing that particular version, the studio version has been in my regular rotation, and I've found a real appreciation for the song, like I do with every other PJ song. If I had one PJ song to pick for the rest of my life, it wouldn't be Whale Song. That doesn't mean I don't ever listen to it or appreciate it. You know what I'm saying? These guys are musical genius's, and every song, every chord change is done with a purely artistic connotation. I don't think they've ever had a bad song, or a bad album, and I think deep down, all of you feel the exact same way.

You can't be a true Pearl Jam fan unless you hate Pearl Jam.

Seriously though, even with Whale Song, which is not a particularly enjoyable song, Pearl Jam (ie the group that we're all so obsessed with that we spend countless hours posting on a fucking fan website forum dedicated to them) still took the time to put it together and throw it on a compilation. You might say you hate the song, but if you were having a conversation with Ed Ved, you sure as hell wouldn't reveal that hatred to him. Instead, you scurry to your computer and bash the song with fellow PJ nerds.

If Ed asked me what I thought of Whale Song I'd tell him the truth to his face, that I hated it. That's what real friends do.

I'd probably be more wishy washy, but yeah ... I'd have no problem telling Ed (or Jack) "yeah, uh ... not really my favorite Pearl Jam song."
