Having been pulled into many discussions about the greatness of Michael Jackson, I started thinking about other artists from my childhood that were prevalent on the radio. I think there was more Phil Collins than anyone else in the 80s/early 90s. The only other individuals that spring to mind are Sting/The Police and Bryan Adams. Check out the songlist below. You probably know all of them.

With Genesis:
Turn It On Again
No Son Of Mine
I Can't Dance
Hold On My Heart
Jesus He Knows Me
Tell Me Why
Invisible Touch
Land Of Confusion
Tonight Tonight Tonight
In Too Deep
Throwing It All Away
Mama
That's All
Illegal Alien
Abacab
No Reply At All

Without Genesis:
"Another Day in Paradise"
"Easy Lover"
"You Can't Hurry Love"
"Two Hearts"
"I Wish it Would Rain Down"
"Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)"
"Something Happened on the Way to Heaven"
"Separate Lives" (Stephen Bishop)
"Both Sides of the Story"
"One More Night"
"Sussudio"
"Dance into the Light"
"A Groovy Kind of Love"
"In the Air Tonight"
"Take Me Home"

Do you like Phil Collins? I’ve been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album Duke. Before that I really didn’t understand any of their work. It was too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collin’s presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch is the group’s undisputed masterpiece. It’s an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.

Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins, and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship and sheer songwriting this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive, affirmative, as anything I’ve heard in rock.

Phil Collins’ solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying in a narrower way, especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word “artist.”

I know a guy who is in his early 20's and he WORSHIPS Phil Collins. His favorite Stones album is Dirty Work and his favorite David Bowie album is Never Let Me Down. Sometimes I think he's pulling my leg but he's totally serious. Weird guy. He's good looking but he never gets any pussy because he's so strange. All he wants to talk to girls about is Phil Collins.

Apparently he started using quotation marks around his song titles after leaving Genesis
