I didn't really like "Pet Sounds" until I heard the stereo remix. It truly is an astonishing difference from the poor quality of the mono mix. Argue if you will, but I don't care if the mono is "what Brian intended". It sounds like shit.
I can't help but wonder which version the "haters" have heard.

The Beatles were the best band - no doubt in my mind. how could a band called "The Beach Boys" rule the rock world, seriously? and they suffered from having a perfect 60s douchebag with them (Mike Love) who kept arguing with their genius in residence about stuff he just couldn't grasp. if it wasn't for him, maybe TBB would have been relevant post-67 but as it stands they just diluted their talent more and more until Kokomo, lol. The Beatle never had a dull moment and kept moving forward until their break-up.
some early singles, Pet Sounds, the Smile Sessions and Smiley Smile are what stands out for me. God Only Knows, Surf's Up, Heroes and Villains, Good Vibrations and Wouldn't it Be Nice are pop masterpieces that are as good as The Beatles best songs.

I think I agree with you. Regardless, the songs are just fantastic.

Yes.

As a kid I always knew that Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows were special songs. I knew WIBN from oldies radio, and GOK was the standout track on a cheap compilation LP that my uncle gave me. It wasn't until many years later that I heard a crappy mono CD of "Pet Sounds". I wasn't impressed by the rest of the songs at all. Then the "Pet Sounds Sessions" box came out with the stereo remix and I finally understood it. Had it sounded that good at the time, I think it would have been a more successful album. I also suspect that a lot of haters have only heard the mono mix, but it's just a hunch.
