Even if you don't recognize Marks name you should recognize his music, especially if you were watching Nickelodeon in the early 90's. Before I go into how exactly you'd know this guys music I'd like to point you to his band Miracle Legion. They had a string of good songs throughout the 80's and I guess you could compare them to REM if you had to. Their best known album was released in 1992 and titled Drenched. Very good stuff on it. I'll go ahead and link a song I think you guys might enjoy.

What everyone else should know them from is a little show called The Adventures of Pete and Pete. One of my favorite shows in my early teenage years. The show takes place in the fictional northeast town of Wellsville, though the state hasn't been named many speculate it is New Jersey. The Adventures of Pete and Pete is about two red-headed brothers that are several years apart in age, and complete polar opposites in terms of personality - yet somehow, through all of life's struggles, they are always the best of friends. Just a fantastic show about being a kid and the northeast setting struck a chord with me as I lived in Buffalo, NY at the time. The shows atmosphere was palpable to me. It was very much a show about the kids vs. adults who had lost their spirit and forgotten what made life worth living. Though there were several adult figures in the show that were there to let us know adulthood didn't have to be all gloom and getting old. Here is a little known fact for you that are fans of the show. Remember Artie, the strongest man in the world? He had a catchphrase, "Pipe" and it was completely related to smoking weed! Kreb-tastic! Not to mention the famouse "indie" actors and musicians that guest starred, Iggy Pop (a reacurring role as a neighborhood dad), Janine Garafolo, Micheal Stipe, Luscious Jackson, Kate McPherson, Steve Buscemi!... Pretty good stuff!

Alright so here's the song you WOULD know Mark and 2 of his Mircale Legion Bandmates from!

They also appeared in an episode titled A Hard Day's Pete in which the younger Pete who never had a taste for music hears a neighborhood garageband as he wanders home. The song he hears immediatly changes his views on music and becomes his first favorite song. Without a recording of it though the melody and lyrics slowly fade no matter how hard he tries to retain them. He returns to the house only to find it abandoned. The song is called Summerbaby if you want to look it up.

The last few years have been tough for Mark, I read his wife died in 2008 and financials have been tight for him. A tribute record was made by Thom Yorke, Frank Black, The National, Dinosaur Jr., Michael Stipe, Juliana Hatfield, Mercury Rev, David Berkeley, Frank Turner and others so that he might continue making music unobstructed.

Personally I really like the guys music and the Adventures was a huge huge part of growing up and I like to think that at 31 the show still has an influence on me and how to continue having fun while getting older.

Whooooaaa that Polaris song really took me back. The taste of Hi-C instantly hit my tongue, the feel of the sun at the pool in the summer afternoon...

I haven't heard the first song before, but that one was good too.

I'm a few years younger, but I was a religious Nickelodeon watcher from '91 (Ren N' Stimpy tweaked my young brain for life) to '98 or so. Pete n' Pete was huge for everyone in my age group.

I read some articles on Onion AV Club that still hold the show in high esteem, so I'll have to revisit some eps soon.

Random aside: One of my friends back in 2000 claimed that one of her friends had a friend who hung out with Little Pete, and he was into snorting heroin.

I probably ruined my own thread, it is going to turn into another drummer debate.

Let's keep this on track, it's about Pete and Pete and Mark Mulcahy.

Here's another factoid about the show, it was created by and produced by 20 and 30 somethings who were in the bohemian nyc scene. The woman who directed the most episodes also did the video for REMs Stand.
