Owl_Farmer may disagree, but Godspeed is a little less accessible then Explosions or Mogwai. The payoff takes longer. I can pick up and play an Explosion or Mogwai album anytime. I really have to be in the right mood for Godspeed.

I don't disagree at all. Godspeed is an acquired taste. That's why I'm kind of hesitant about recommending them to chud.
But now that I know he likes EITS, I'd suggest starting with Lift Your Skinny Fists...

Yep, bain is right. Lift... is obviously way better but Kanada might be their second-best release and way, way easier to digest because each of the movements is self-contained, unlike the sprawling epic of Lift
