i just returned from seeing a most unbelievable film entitled birth, starring nicole kidman. it's the story of a woman whose husband died a decade earlier, she is on the cusp of restarting her life w/o him, and then....a 10 year old boy comes into her life claiming to be her dead husband, reincarnated.
brilliantly done, hauntingly tragic...filled with such love, loss, devotion.....absolutely heartbreaking. it is not a happy film at all - but it so makes you think of love and all its manifestations, question your own thoughts of life after death and the true ties between people.
i cannot say enough good things about it. my husband and i walked out of the theatre dumb-founded, went and had a meal and couldn't stop discussing it and all its meanings. really, really sad and beautiful.
the score is unreal - so perfectly suited....not so much music but the vibrations of music with classical overtones throughout. also a stellar supporting cast including arliss howard and lauren bacall. the child actor was well cast and had such a face for emotion. just a great movie experience.

i was doing a lot of reading about this...and many reviewers have said the film is mainly generated towards getting nicole kidman an academy award...any truth to this?

i think it is all about making an excellent film and getting audiences to really think of what it is to truly love...what you believe...what you are willing to believe to make your heart happy. if nicole gets a nomination it is simply b/c this is excellent material and she does a stellar job with the role. just a truly gut-wrenching, tragic love.

I'm really interested in this film. I tend to avoid going to see sad movies because they really bum me out, but I think I'll make an exception for this one.

If you like Kidman go rent the Human Stain. A very different role for her. She really is a great actress. Unfortunately I think she gets honored for her less than awesome roles. ie- The Hours, Cold Mountain

i saw all 3 of those films. while i really enjoyed the human stain - i think she has been honored for the proper roles imho. she was outstanding in the hours in particular. she is quite brilliant in most roles - so i don't think she ever really misses the mark.

I just saw this movie. It was horrible. Not interesting in the least. I walk away from this movie feeling blahhhhh. I should have known better than to get a Nicole Kidman film.

Sounds like a bonafide chick flick
