I have often felt that Matt was underutilized with a lot of PJs catalogue, not enough of a challenge. However, since he's been playing with Soundgarden again I feel that his chops and a certain snap precision is back in his playing. Has anyone else felt/heard this?

I just think he's more inspired by Soundgarden's music. It gives him more to do. Pearl Jam aren't an exciting drummer's band anymore.
Didn't he recently declare the Fixer, along with Jesus Christ Pose, is one of the songs he's most proud of?
That's because The Fixer, and all of the songs he's written, are PJ's only good "drumming songs" since he joined the band. By saying he's proud of it, what he's saying is: "It's kept me in the band." You can say what you like about the rest of the song (I like it for what it is, always did), it's fun to play as a drummer.

it took me a while to like Matt songs in PJ. I used to hate Ecuation and wasnt keen on In the moonlight and i like both of them now. I guess its because i listened more of his work as a songwriter in bands like WWC, so i get more of what he is trying to do...his pop signature was really good for the band. I hope he pushed them more in terms of doing a really strong fisical song, like JCC, because this band can rock like a motherfucker when they want to.
they need to look for new jam songs..like rvm or porch. Of the earth was a good intention.

I've never really understood the Jack love either, and none of the video evidence I've had has convinced me he's any better than Matt. He just has different strengths and weaknesses.

Jack Irons is a considerably weaker drummer - technically speaking - than Matt Cameron.
