This is confusing to me. Normally micksomenumbers and I seem to have similar television tastes, but I disagree with this whole heartedly. I have enjoyed this season quite a bit.

I just felt like the season wasn't going anywhere. The nucky and his mistress thing had been done before, and a lot of time was spent on what ended up being a pointless plot line. I really thought the stuff centered around van Alden was good but they'd spend a few scenes on it and then not go back to it for 4 or 5 episodes. It was worth it though because the last 2 episodes have been incredible and lead into what I assume will be a great finale.

I'd say season 3 was the best for me. I loved the finale and Gyp was a great villian. There were some slow moments, but like the 2nd half of season 2. This season got better as it went along.

I was too, but only a little bit. I think part of it had to do with such a strong penultimate episode, which is often the case. But I think things just moved too quickly for this one. A few phone calls are made, Harrow kills some people without anyone else knowing, and then Masseria's guys are all killed in one scene. The actual fighting that took place as a result of the events in the previous episode was all glossed over in the opening murder montage. As a result of all this, the episode lacked a building suspense throughout it.
With that said, I still enjoyed it. The AV Club rated last week's episode and A and this week's an A-. I would have given the finale a B or a B+ instead.

i can get on board with this. the set up and preview of the finale gave the impression that it'd be action packed, but instead we had to endure pointless gyp/gillian kink for what seemed like ten minutes, etc.

Exactly. The action was glossed over/rushed and then all of a sudden Nucky won.
I do however like the set up for the Nucky/Rothstein feud for season 4.

THIS.
also, how long can this show stay focused on AC and still be entertaining? don't we all want more focus on iconic gangsters like capone and luciano eventually?

Next season we will see the rise of Capone and Luciano. The year will be 1924 and that was when the two of them really became ruthless. Capone will probably take over cicero and Luciano will become his own man.
If they stick to history, Luciano will end up working for Masseria before really coming into his own. And that'll happen after Rothstein gets shot over a poker debt.
