So does anyone hold any hope that something significant will be done to address climate change in the next four years?

I dont see any odds whatsoever that something approaching the amount of needed change will occur. Given the choice between immediate economic woes and future economic catastrophy, i think most peoples vote is obvious.

Honestly, i think its been a long time now that the best hope we have is our ever accelerating technology and scientific knowledge. Its more of a race to prepare than a race to prevent.

Well, partisan politics could slide us into a deeper recession and people could stop buying gasoline (assuming you still think that car emissions matter in climate change).

But srsly any of these I give a 50/50 chance to:

protectionist trade policies could be enacted
people could greatly reduce red meat consumption due to rising costs
government subsidies could shift energy production away from coal

You honestly think this is a 50/50 chance? I wish it was, but people like beef way too much.

The coming re-recession plus a significant cost increase (maybe pricier feed stocks) would shift consumption away from beef. Maybe not 50/50 that Obama would target this in his second term, but it could be a side effect of other laws.

This is point worth pondering. I attended a panel discussion near recently and one of the speakers mentioned that, because things are getting so bad, it is as important to discuss pro-active preventative measures as it is to discuss defensive measures. In other words, we should try to fix problems going forward, but the environment is bad and getting worse, and we should try to prepare for the consequences.

Or, if you are a devout believer, get excited.

Just looking at the kinds of numerical changes that would have to occur, and the time frame in which they would have to happen, makes prevention look impossible to my eyes. And that's not even factoring in the pressures and needs of the human element.

But the speed and scope of human technological inventiveness is, interestingly enough, more impossible to predict than an entire planet's geological and geothermal future...so every new day makes a difference.

Two degrees (that's centigrade, my dear dumb Americans) is already built into the system. It's time to prepare and adapt, cretin America, and pay for your gluttonous use of fossil fuels.

On a side note, my feet are fucking freezing, I'll take two degrees right now.

I assume that's a typo and you mean "China", as they overtook the US in the mid-2000s and are well on their way to catching up in total historical emissions levels. America still has the best food production system in the world and could withstand project global warming levels, we will survive. We will just have to start producing our own iCrap again.

Actually, and don't tell Matt Damon, carbon emissions in the US are on the decline because of all this natural gas we're getting from frakking. It's a lot cleaner burning energy source than coal. Coal industry isn't doing so well right now :(
