North Carolina Senate just passed a bill to stiffen the penalty for breaking into a church. What about schools? Non-profits? Charities? My house? I mean, churches are a good thing, but they aren't the only beneficial organizations in North Carolina that have computers, TVs, petty cash, etc. Why should you get in more trouble for breaking into a church than anywhere else?

After dozens of church break-ins over the past year, state lawmakers say it is time to crack down on thieves.
Last year in Sampson County, thieves broke into a number of churches, stealing electronic equipment such as TVs and VCRs. Right now, it is possible for someone caught stealing from a church to be sentenced with just community service.
Authorities said that since they are considered places of worship, the offenses should be considered more serious. Their message caught the eyes of state lawmakers.
"[The new bill] sends a message to the criminal element that if you break into a place of worship, you're going to do jail time," said Sen. Fred Smith, R-Johnston.
The bill passed unanimously in the Senate. It now goes to the House, where a similar bill is already circulating.

AN ACT to create the criminal offense of breaking or entering a building that is a place of RELIGIOUS worship.
The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:
SECTION 1. Article 14 of Chapter 14 of the General Statutes is amended by adding a new section to read:
"§ 14‑54.1. Breaking or entering a building that is a place of religious worship.
(a) Any person who wrongfully breaks or enters any building that is a place of religious worship with intent to commit any felony or larceny therein is guilty of a Class G felony, except as provided by subsection (b) of this section.
(b) A person is guilty of a Class F felony if:
(1) The person breaks or enters two or more buildings that are places of religious worship; or
(2) The person is convicted of a second or subsequent violation of subsection (a) of this section.
(c) As used in this section, a "building that is a place of religious worship" shall be construed to include any church, chapel, meetinghouse, synagogue, temple, or mosque, or other building that is regularly used, and clearly identifiable, as a place for religious worship."
SECTION 2. This act becomes effective December 1, 2005, and applies to offenses committed on or after that date.
JamElizabeth, if a church is somehow required to leave their doors unlocked in order to complete their "churchly" business, I might reconsider my opposition to this bill.

You should put up a sign on your house that says "Church of just_b", and say that you regularly use it to worship.

My in-laws have a name for their church ... it's something like the Church of My Warm Sheets or something like that to signify that they sleep in each Sunday. Hey, we each worship God in our own way. When I'm under my duvet on the featherbed with my comfy pillows and soft sheets ... that's pretty damn close to heaven.

I don't know what the penalties are for breaking into houses. If you are correct and, for some reason, the law was easier on people breaking into churches as opposed to other public buildings, I would also drop my opposition to the bill.
But if that were the case, why wouldn't they write a law that strikes down the "church exemption" instead of writing new penalties for breaking into churches?

Before you guys get your panties in too big of a twist, the article does say that there have been a number of church break-ins over the past year. And I must ask, if you're not planning on breaking into any churches, what's the big deal? Everybody is so quick nowadays to get riled up just because they see the word "church" or "Christian." I've been getting that way myself lately, but I woke up this morning feeling like it's time to change.

Well, I thought that if you were gonna call punkdavid on his claim, you'd hafta search for:
