I cannot friggin' decide what notebook to get for college. I need good wireless internet stuff, and 512 RAM and blah blah blah, nothing too fancy, but nothing too shitty.
In five years, when you get laid and grow up, you should go back and read some of these posts and if you've turned into a decent person you'll realize how much of an asshole you sound like right now

the hp has an intel centrino processor, the compaq has amd sempron.
i don't have much experience with laptops but centrino might provide better battery life with wireless.
I don't think it's worth the extra cash, but i don't know if i'd buy a compaq or hp either
assuming college starts in the fall, wait as long as you can. anything you buy now will be obsolete by the end of your school year
RAM is important. Hard disk space isn't as important unless, you're downloading a lot of music and videos. dvd burner is a "might as well get it" option. video card won't matter too much.
I'm sure you can get what you need for well under $1000. timing is the most important thing. you might want to pick up a magazine. Either PC magazine or PC world. I know one of them does a roundup every month of the best laptops/desktops/printers/etc.
decide on what YOU need and shop around. You need wireless and 512MB of ram. do you like touchpads or those thumb sticks that IBM uses? if you feel like taking the power cord everywhere don't worry too much about battery life. do you NEED it to be super light to carry it around or will it sit on your desk 99% of the time?
if i was in the market for one, i'd wait for the great dell deals to come back. there's a good HP zv6000 deal on techbargains.com. but i don't care about weight, and i'd want a big hard drive.
tigerdirect.com often sells refurbed/open box dells (and other laptops) for cheapy cheap cheap. the dells look like they come w/ a 3 month warranty, not sure about the other ones.

Refurbished is basically used but still under warranty. Some veders will also gussy it up with new hardware and whatnot. I got a HP dv1000, but with more ram, faster processer, and a dvd burner for a great deal. I asked around my offices about buying refurbished and no one experienced any negativity, so I gave it a shot. No complaints here. The product is like new.
