We get to buy strong beers soon! Probably doesn't fare well for the DUI law, but hey! Right now NC is capped off at 6% alcohol for beers. The bill is introduced on Monday!

A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT TO amend the definition of a malt beverage under the Alcoholic Beverage control laws.
The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:
SECTION 1. G.S. 18B-101(9) reads as rewritten:
"(9) 'Malt beverage' means beer, lager, malt liquor, ale, porter, and any other brewed or fermented beverage containing at least one‑half of one percent (0.5%), and not more than six percent (6%), one-half of one percent (0.5%) alcohol by volume."
SECTION 2. This act is effective when it becomes law.

Here in Amish country when the state allowed liquor stores to be open on Sundays there was a huge protest. (you can only buy booze in state stores here in PA)

Yea in Georgia they raised it to 14% a couple of months ago. Most of the high octane beers 10-14% taste like shit. There are some really good beers between 6 and 8%. And with Steel Reserve 8.1 you can get drunk for $2 :D

I drank this stuff called Old Rasputin the other night at dinner. It was 9%, and it went down like a bag of cement.

The area I grew up in still doesn't allow alcohol sales on Sunday, even in restaurants. Bunch of wackos.

There's some microbrews in the state that make some high quality 9%+ beers. Quite tasty.

Molson XXX is ok (7.6%)....but If I want something stronger...I'll drink wine....Or if I want something stronger yet...belvadere or whiskey (jameson, J&B, or Makers)....

that aside, i seriously can't fathom some of these laws....if the govt prohibits a strong beer...they are basically promoting hard liqour sales...which may be in their benefit, depending on the state regulations of liqour sales.

It's funny...most people think prohibition is a solved issue...but when you really think about it, nothing could be further from the truth.

I'm looking forward to Dogfish Head's World Wide Stout (23%), the strongest stout in the world! Woo hoo! I love the law down here. I'm not responsible enough to handle that beer, but I can guzzle Everclear like it's my job.

So, just to get things straight, is any beer over 6% currently illegal, even though any hard liquor can be purchased?

Correct.

The 6% cap appears twice in North Carolina's General Statues. In Chapter 18B (§18B-101(9)), addressing the regulation of alcoholic beverages, and in Chapter 105, Taxation (§105-113.68(7)). In both sections, the definition of beer is exactly the same:

"'Malt beverage' means beer, lager, malt liquor, ale, porter, and any other brewed or fermented beverage containing at least one-half of one percent (0.5%) and not more than six percent (6%), alcohol by volume."

House Bill 392 will strike out the words "and not more than six percent."

Other states with a 6% cap on beer: South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas

Utah's beer is capped at 3.2%. Only state stores sold stronger beer, but then you have to buy it by the bottle at near bar prices. No kegs, no cases, no 6 packs.

Utah's drinking laws are by far the most fucked up in the country.

Of course, SC makes bartenders use those little airplane bottles. That's hilarious.

This is awesome! I've written lawmakers, called lawmakers, and gone to the General Assembly and talked to representatives. Now, we've got a boycott going on a distributor who has come out against us!

My favorite high gravity is Dogfish Head's 120 Minute Pale Ale.

Ah, steel reserve, I have many a fond memory (or lack of fonder memories) attributed to that fine substance. The overhang is a wicked pisser though.

Success in the House!

Folks, it's been a long day, so this will be short.

HB392 passed in the House by a wide margin. Tomorrow, the House will have a third and final reading...really just a technicality that should pose no problems. After around May 19th, we will be in the Senate - first for a committee session, then the Senate floor.

It's hard to communicate just how big of a day today was for the campaign. Getting through the House was HUGE! Our hats off to Theresa Kostrzewa, our lobbyist, as well as Represenatives LaRoque, Daughtridge, and Earle for voicing their support for the bill.
