My favorite band. I was going to resurrect that Pavement thread last night, actually.
Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is my favorite, but Slanted and Enchanted is basically the epitome of what Pavement was and represents. Go chronologically, it's all amazing.

S&E is their best, but it's a little hard to get into if you ask me. It's really raw and the production is utter shit. Start with Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Any of the first 4 albums are gold.

They kinda bore and annoy me. Off-key singing is only "new" and "cool" and "hip" for so long.
what? Pavement's been fairly popular for over a decade now.

If you wanna figure out an album to start with, you should get the re-releases of CR, CR or S&E, they're both double discs and cost about the same as your typical single album... they've got some awesome previously unreleased tracks and alternative versions of songs
Hehe...that's pretty close to what I thought when I heard them, too. My exacts thoughts were "Wow, Weezer are a bunch of fucking fakers compared to these guys."
My standing on the albums:
S+E=Great stuff, really cool album. It's got a lot of soul. Not very accessible outside of a few songs, requires a bit of an attention span at first.
CRCR=Very balanced, rocking album. Probably the best.
WZ=Some really cool songs, some bad ones. Doesn't come together in a satisfying experience in the end, but certainly worth listening to.
BTC=Half the songs are INSANELY, ridiculously catchy. You won't be able to get Stereo and Starlings out of your head for months. A few of the songs are really dull, though, and overall it lacks a little subtance. But, still great.
TT=I couldn't even bring myself to listen to the whole thing. I thought it was crap.

Pretty good assessment. TT does seem more mediocre than the rest.

Somehow i missed the whole pavement thing years ago and never caught up. I downloaded a few songs a year or 2 ago and never paid much attention, but recently Grounded came on my random list and i really dug it.
So my new mission is to get in to Pavement.
