I have a question. I don't mean to be insensitive but my dog is rather old, he will be 13 soon. I've often wondered what I'll do with him when he passes. Do you take him to the vet, or did he get get put to sleep by the vet? I think it will be very difficult either way but I don't know if I could put my dog to sleep just because he's old. He's been in my family since he was a puppy.
I almost lost one of my precious kitties during the 2003 tour. He got sick on my wedding day (july 2 03, Boston I) and then he had emergency surgery on july 3 03 (boston II).
I went to the Boston shows, but I missed both Philly and MSG shows I had planned for my HONEYMOON for this kitty. I could not leave him.
People have teased me for this, people have told me I should have gone on my honeymoon/shows, but I couldn't.
I just couldn't. I'd have died with worry.
Pets are amazing friends and companions...my deepest condolences
edit: tried to post the pic of my kitty post surgery, but i am a dumbass, and I can't figure it out. do I have to have the pic online somewhere in order to post it?

I don't think this should spark any debate whatsoever. We should all be a little less uptight when it comes to 'rules' or 'guidelines', especially when it comes to personal issues like this.
I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. I know how much it's always hurt when I've lost a pet...no words...

Age isn't a disease. Nobody dies from being "old", so don't feel like there's any need to euthanize a pet just because people give you shocked looks when you say how old they are. As long as he's healthy and happy, there's nothing to worry about. When the time comes, you can take him to a vet for humane euthanasia, or he may pass quietly in his sleep. There are numerous private burial/cremation services and I'm sure your vet could help you identify one.

Well you'll probably have an idea when it's time. Your dog is 13 but might be in great shape. If there's problems that seriously take away from his quality of life, you'll know, or your vet will let you know what's going on. Just keep an eye on him, because dogs can often suffer in silence. But yes when it's time you can take your dog to the vet if you've made the decision and the vet will put him to sleep. It's a hard thing to do because you're ultimately making the decision to end their life. I held my dog while the vet did it, and it was one of the worst things I ever experienced.

I've got a beagle too, and he's getting up there (12 years old now, we've had him since he was only a few months.) Beagles are absolutely the most affectionate creatures that you will ever encounter. I'm sorry about your loss. Was he old or in failing health?

i've heard that beagles (i think it's beagles) try to run away when they feel death approaching because they feel like they are letting their owner down?... i've always thought it sounded like BS, but it's too cool a tale to let go of... anyone heard anything like this?
