A longshot in a North American-dominated board, I know, but I was just wondering what everyone thinks about the election results in Norn Iron?
To the uninitiated, of the 18 westminster seats, only 4 went to "moderate" parties whilst the rest were dominated by the extremes of politics here. On one side is Sinn Fein, fiercely pro-Irish whose MPs won't even attend parliament and are the political wing of a paramilitary organisation and on the other, the rabidly right-wing Bible-thumping DUP, whose leader began his victory speech by singing a hymn, badly.
It's just all gone to hell here, if only we could have left/centre/right wing divisions in our politics here and not have to vote along tribal lines. Argh!
I'm sorry to hear that that situation continues to be a mess. I'm reading about The Committee right now...I'm not anywhere near qualified enough to speak on the division that pervades Ireland, but it seems that the massive Catholic/Protestant violence there is only encouraged by England's approach (or lack thereof) to the grievences and philosophies which birth it.
I'm pretty sure Dermot Morgan could have solved all of that nation's problems.
