... the single worst entity in the history of sports? And if not, is it at least the worst, worst, worst sports radio show ever?
The answer is yes and yes.
Seriously, how can anyone listen to this garbage? There's no intelligent sports discussion that goes on. It's just Rome blabbering on and on about various sports and non-sports issues, never saying anything insightful, just getting all pissy and repeating himself 10 freaking times in a row. And then he'll have these asinine callers on, who apparently are reading from scripts that they've written and do nothing but talk trash. They, too (even moreso than Rome), never have anything intelligent to say; the whole show is a contest to see which caller can talk the fastest and come up with the sharpest zingers. My god, I've never heard anything so utterly lame.
Does anyone actually like this show?

Actually, Rome is the only sports show that is listenable...but it's mostly the clones that make it work. Don't get me wrong, Romey has good takes, but he'd be NOTHING without the emailers!
Now, if you were to replace the words "Jim Rome" with "Dan Patrick" in your title, and then modify the body of your message to read "Is this guy about as exciting as a 6-4 football game, or what?" then I may be tempted to agree with you.

The Jim Rome show is one of those shows that you either love or you hate. I love it. I think the format of the show is different and therefore thoughtful, I think he has some funny takes. I think he's realistic about things, not like most shock jocks in sports talk radio. I like it when he takes on the athletes head on, not beating around the bush with them and taking on the issues.
One of the funniest guys ever is Steve Elkington, a golfer! He came on the show and was talking about Vegas one time and I about died!
War Pimp in the box and
War Red Sox ending the rymes with verse.

Well, I just realized the other day that Dan Patrick's show is now on ESPN Radio at the same time, so I don't listen anymore. I just can't get over how juvenile the entire thing is.

But, I mean, that's the thing. The whole show is based on who can talk trash the best. That's not what sports is about. That seems to me to be the lowest common denominator. "Yay, I can say 'the Cubs suck!' seven different ways within thirty seconds and name drop Michael Jackson in a totally unrelated reference at the end." WTF? What's the appeal in that? The callers and e-mailers hardly ever actually want to discuss why the Cubs sucks, or offer any interesting comments or observations on the issue. They just yell and scream obscenities and supposedly clever one-liners like drunken morons.
Also, what is a "clone"? I still don't get it.

Yeah, but the whole show is nothing but "takes". There's no discussion. And I don't see it as thoughtful in the least. I see almost no thought whatsoever going into the content, only the style in which it's delivered. All the callers come to these very basic, totally biased opinions without any interesting backup whatsoever. It's sports fan at their absolute worst.

I like it because it's different.
I used to listen to Dan Patrick a lot in the afternoon, but got really tired of him kissing every ass that was presented to him. Patrick is the worst interviewer I've ever heard, he's so worried about trying to buddy-buddy his subject that rarely is anything ever said. He's the epitome of vanilla, bland, harmless radio. He sounds like a local evening sports talk host in Dubuque, Iowa for god's sake.
Like someone else said, with Rome you either get it or you don't. He is egomaniacal, he is off-topic, it is hard to just drop in occasionally and listen. The thing is, for those that "get" the show...we can't stop listening. I've never laughed so hard in my life at some of his interviews. Evel Kinevel... "Do you know who the hell I am?" comes to mind..

Before I started watching Rome is Burning I didnt like him because I thought he just try to rile everyone up. But now that I watch it i really find his show enjoyable.
The worst sports entity ever by far is Max Kellerman. Around the Horn was just terrible with him. And have you seen I, Max. Probaby the worst show ever, not just sports show, but all shows. Absolutly pointless. IMO

Or sometimes they'll use a tape recorder.

Haha, of course their not that intelligent. Trapper and Jeff in Richmond are the epitome of a vacuous caller. Shit, probably 95 percent of the callers are dipshits. But that's what makes that show so great. The show isn't about dissecting every minutia in the sports world. It's about entertainment and laughs, with a little bit of serious sports discussion. You should really listen to the smack off every year. It's friggin' hilarious.
Rome always says to give the show about six weeks. How long have you been listening to it? I have been listening to it for seven years now. It's great radio. Dan Patrick's show is garbage, my friend. And so is that idiot, Tony Kornheiser.

War Evel Kinevel's cane.
Brian Giles was a good interview this summer..."Pronk" another good one....and don't forget Moch Mota!
Like Athletic Supporter said...it's not everyone's cup of tea...you have to like Rome's sense of humor...which isn't for everyone.

Or in Silk Brah's case, two discarded Solo cups and a coat hanger.

I agree, and he can be an acquired taste. It took me a month or so of regular listening before I really got into the show and liked it. My reaction the first time I heard the show was "what the fuck is with this guy?"
For the most part, I think his interviews are great, and you hear a lot of stuff from athletes and personalities that you aren't going to hear anywhere else. Curt Schilling a few days back is a perfect example.

Well, I don't listen to it on a regular basis. I would catch pieces of it on the way to work and stuff. It's not Rome himself or the interviews as much as those idiotic callers that get to me. I wanna roll my eyes non-stop whenever I'm listening, but I can't, because I'm usually driving. But, Christ, grow the fuck up. I don't know. I don't find that kind of stuff funny. It's just lame to me.
Dan Patrick I like. He at least has something somewhat intelligent and reasonable to say. Sure, he's not exactly a hard-hitting journalist who'll ask "the tough questions", but sports isn't exactly the type of arena where there are tough questions that need to be asked. I've switched over to listening to his show on the drive to work and enjoy it much more. He's actually talking about sports and there's no mindless trash talking. I really just don't see any kind of appeal to those callers/e-mailers.
I guess I'm just not looking for anything that's pushing the envelope when I'm tuning in to sports radio stations. I just wanna hear some people talking about baseball and football.
