I watched Adrian Lyne's 1997 remake of Lolita last night, mind you I've never seen the original or read the book. It was pretty damn amazing, I was expecting it to be a little less "shocking" than it was actually, but on the other hand you couldn't help but empathize with Humbert's love for his step daughter, which is a very odd situation when you start to think about it from different angles.

If you ever want to read the book, make sure to get the Vintage Annotated edition in trade paperback.
The novel is essentially a big puzzle (as are some of Nabokov's other works -- Pale Fire comes to mind), and the annotated edition contains a chapter by chapter breakdown that explains, highlights subtle aspects of the novel.
Absolutely mind-blowing reading experience, if you're into experimental fiction that actually sustains interest -- unlike most experimental fiction which, often, is writer-masturbatory friendly.
