Not sure if there are any other tennis fans on the board, but I'm really looking forward to this years' French Open... Gaston Gaudio is my favorite to win - he's got some skills on clay courts... I like clay tourneys the most (Wimbledon has always been my favorite, but...) because the traditional powers aren't necessarily favorites... Federer is amazing but I really don't like him and guys like Nalbandian and Roddick are tough to get behind... Guga used to be my favorite post-Sampras player but he kinda bowed out...

Do you call yourselves tennis fans and you don't know that Rafael Nadal is in a 18 game winning strike? Do you know that he's won 5 tournaments this year (Costa Do Sauipe, Acapulco, Montecarlo, Barcelona and Rome)? Yesterday's game was one of the most awesome games I have seen in all my life... This guy NEVER gives up!! (5th set, losing 3-0 and Coria serving, and he won the game )

Nadal is a favorite, but like I said, traditional powers don't have good track records at the French Open (Roddick lost in the second round last year as a 2 seed to Oliver Mutis... who??)... and as far as never giving up, Gaudio came back from 2 sets down in last years French Open final, marking the 6th time that has ever happened... the kid is a scrapper

But clay surface changes everything. Roddick skills don't worth a shit over clay, because he mainly rests his game on his serve, and clay surface tend to slow down ball's speed, so the good serving skills don't worth the same. The kind of skills you need on clay are good background strokes, mobility and a high endurance. If you are a technical guy (as Sampras was, for instance) you have nothing to do over clay. You have to be strong and hard. Roddick is good on fast surfaces (grass, hard) but loses his "ranking" on clay.
Nadal has three titles and a 18 matches winning streak all of them over clay. He has won Gaudio, Coria, and other clay experts in the last month. So I think he can be considered much more favorite than, for instance, Roddick or even Federer.

Yep, I know all about Clay... I played a few amateur tournaments at Roland Garros, but like I've said (Nadal included) the French Open has a way of knighting people who aren't favorites... I will side with Nadal at times though just because it seems like Spaniards are bred for clay and typically do well in Paris... do y'all play on clay courts over there like Americans play on hard courts or something?

Well, there are lots of clay courts in Barcelona. I live in Madrid, and I've never seen a clay court here. All courts are hard surfaces (at least all the ones I played on). But I know that in Barcelona (and in Valencia also, where Ferrero and Safin used to train) there are plenty of clay courts, and young tennis players they all train on that kind of courts. But there are clay courts all over Europe, so that might not be the reason... And it's not only at Paris, the late two Davis Cups that Spain won were both over clay surface (at least the finals) Maybe it's because we're tough guys... I don't know, but I'm glad Roland Garros is coming
And Nadal has quit Hamburg to recover from his wounded left hand... Yeps, he's left-handed... even though, he won Rome Tournament... Impressive!

What are u guys doing starting a tennis topic without me. I gotta check the sports more often. Nadal and Henin-Hardene are the favorites, but the French is typically up for grabs. If anyone's up for it me and my friends used to fill out the brackets for grand slam tennis events, just like filling out the NCAA brackets. PM or post back if guys are interested.
