What is the point of this? Why not just rank all the teams from worst to best?
I've wanted to ask this for a long time, but I never got the impetus to do it until today, since they just had the lottery this year (the Bucks got #1).

I've heard that too, but I don't totally buy it. If a team "tanks" they still improve there chances of getting one of the top 3 picks.
The whole process has never made any sense to me. It should be like any other sport with the worst team getting the first pick. I'm happy for the Bucks though. I don't watch much NBA, but it's always good to see something go good for the home-state team. Lord knows not much went right during the season.

I think it's better because if a team decides to "tank" the season, it is very possible for them to get royally screwed. I think it also spreads the talent out better...
Instead of having the top prospect always ending up at a cellar team, there are these little differences that allow big names to end up with teams that have potential but couldn't put it together the previous style, enough for the playoffs.

Yes a team can still tank the games, but it doesnt have the value it would, thereby decreasing the likelyhood of teams doing.
The NBA, more than any other sport, is a sport where one great player can change your teams direction. So when "franchise" players come out, teams WILL tank games... Which is all fine and good for them, but what about the teams on their schedule in the playoff race?
It makes more sense than Baseball... where its not just record, its alternating league.... Who had the first pick after the tigers won 43 games? The Padres- because it was the national leagues turn.
i disagree wholeheatedly that the NBA is the worst of the four when it comes to their draft. first i think all leagues should model themselves after the nba, no league is even close to being as successful
football sells out ever game. yes, but they only have 8 home games. give them 42 home games and see how many people can still afford it.
baseball has what, 82 home games?
hockey has zero home games now.
i went to an nhl draft, 94-95 maybe? i talked to a few of the kids who got drafted (they played for the erie otters) and to see how happy a kid can be to get picked 65th or whatever it was ( i think one kid went top 20) was a sight to see for sure.
but if you allow teams with the worst record to always get the #1 pick, then 3 or four years go by and all they do is tank to stack their team, thats unfair. the ping pong ball scenario makes much more sense, because if you do tank your season, you still may not get the top pick, at worst, you get #4

actually, i would say baseballs draft is the true nongiant of the nfl, nhl, nba and mlb.
how many of its picks actually go straight on through to the majors without spending a few years in the minors?
that's not what i was saying... what im saying is that hockey is not a MAKOR sport in the u.s..... hell, most people havent even noticed it's been gone... if mlb, the nfl, or the nba missed an entire season, people would notice and it would be talked about daily here in the states... maybe canadians are pissed, but do they really count?

I totally aggree with you , but if they were allowed to tank a season and get the top pick four or five years in a row, the clippers would still suck.
