I know with a lot of the early songs ( such as Brother and Hard To Imagine for example) a lot of people had heard these songs before Lost Dogs came out. Was Hold On circulated before Lost Dogs? had anybody ever heard it before it was on Lost Dogs? Just curious.

I know it wasn't released before, but neither was Girl or Brother and both were readily available for trade before Lost Dogs. Just wondering if Hold On was available, too.

I think Hold On was a total surprise out of the vaults when Lost Dogs was released. It was not a circulating bootleg like Brother or Girl, as far as I know.

ok - apparantly no one around here likes to answer a question directly...
Ok - Hold On was not anywhere to be found before Lost Dogs, but I have a theory...
On the Gossman Project and those demos...there were unreleased songs (that never got words)
The King - which turned into Even Flow supposedly...i haven't heard this to be confirmed, just similar in structure, so a logical assumption
There was an "Untitled" song from these demos that never made it anywhere and was rumored to be the wreck of edmund's fitzgerald...obviously it wasn't...
anyway - another unreleased song was Folk D
These songs are all titled after the key they are in...Folk D is in 3/4 time, Hold On is in 4/4....they sound very similar to me, so I want to say that Folk D is an early version of Hold On

hope that helps....
I'll have to listen to Gossman again. I didn't notice any similarities, but I've only listened to it once. Thanks.
Thanks to everyone else for assuaging my curiosity. Makes me wonder what other gems they have hidden away that no one's aware of.

Dude, I count 5 direct answers before you made this post. What else do you want?

You might check Five Horizons, they should have details on when Hold On was played, based on that you can try to find those shows by asking someone in the trading forum....
No record of it ever being played live. That's why I think it is such a gem. There aren't that many early tunes that they they haven't played at least once live ( that we know of) and for them to just pull this one out is damn cool.

What's more surprising is that there was a song from that era that they never released, never played live, and STILL liked enough to eventually release on a rarities disc. There may be other songs like it that the band thinks are shit and will stay in the can.

I believe that All Night, Sad, Hitchhker, Don't Gimmie No Lip, In The Moonlight, Education, Hold On, Fatal, Sweet Lew, and 4/20/02 are all new songs that never appeared anywhere (offically or unoffically) until lost dogs-although their existence may have been hinted at.
Alone, Black Red Yellow, You, Undone, Hard To Imagine, Foosteps, Wash, Drifting, Brother, and Dirty Frank are all songs that have appeared before, but the versions on lost dogs are all slightly different (although I am not 100% sure about drifting and Hard To Imagine (since that song has popped up on a few different bootlegs with slight variations)
