I've downloaded bittorents on my desktop, but I just got a laptop recently. I've opened the ports on my desktop but cannot remember how I did it. Do I need to open them on the router or on the laptop? I'm kinda confused about it. Thanks for any help you can give me!

you need to do it for each cpu

go to start--> run

type in cmd

hit ok

type--> ipconfig /all
hit enter

note your ip address it shows you. may be similar to 192.168.1.xxx

go to your routers ip address by using your browser, usually 192.168.1.1

find the forwarding part of your router config, usually under advanced

open ports 6881-6999, tcp and udp, and put the last few digits of your ip in the box and click enable. don't forget to name the app in the box.

well if the two computers are on the same network (using the same router) then each one will have to use a different range of ports. if you're using 6881-6889 on the desktop, then you'll have to pick another range for the laptop (unless you want torrents to stop working on the desktop).

but this is easy too. just pick a range and change it in your bittorrent client and on the router.

right now i'm using ports 30100-30200 on my main computer, so that's the range that gets forwarded on my router to the IP address of this computer, and the range that BitTornado uses

so if my desktop is already running on ports 6881-6889, i need to open new ports for my laptop right? does it make a difference what ports i tell it to open as long as i tell the bittorent client to use those? (speaking of which, how do i tell azuerus to use the new ones)

ok, here's another question, what if i wanted the laptop to run on ports 6881-6889? if i went ahead and typed those in, would the ones on my desktop just automatically stop working? Thank you all for your help. I tried reading that walkthrough that was linked with TSIS but i couldn't figure it out. You guys helped greatly.

what if you don't know your router's ip address? i tried the 192.168.1.1 and it did not work. Do you enter the '.'s or not? sorry for all these stupid questions.

EDIT - ok i think i figured out the ip address for the router, but when i type it in it asks for a username and password. SHIT i do not remember what the hell i put that as. I'm a dumbass. What should I do now?

if it's a linksys router and you never changed the password, the default password is admin, and leave the username blank. If it's some other company and you didn't change the password, try googling for it. like d-link router default password

if you can't figure it out, reset the router. There's probably a reset button you can push with a pen or paper clip. if you can't find it, google for the manual. But when you reset it, the router will forget all of its settings. If you have DSL, you'll probably have to put in a username and password after the router is reset. with cable usually you don't need any settings.

the only thing i don't know for sure is if i open ports 6881 through 6889 on my laptop, wil that totally screw up my desktop which should already have those ports opened (even though I think I opened those through the computer, not the router because I've never done it through the router before)
