Ok, I've thought of posting this before, but only now have I found the balls to... because I'm sure this might cause a stir and a bit of arguing. :D

I'm wondering which sport everyone here thinks is the greatest. I don't mean which you like the most, although 95% of the time it's going to be... heck, mine is.

I think what I think because I look at how difficult a sport is.

My pick is hockey.

My argument is this:

I believe it be the world's greatest sport because it is so unique compared to any other sport on earth. I think it takes the most skill to play and to master. You can look at almost any other major sport (major as in big world wide) and they are all full of basic motor skills. And they mostly consist of a key ingredient, a ball.
Basketball, baseball, soccer, football... they all use ordinary running and jumping as the main strengths.
Hockey is unlike any of these. You must learn all new motor skills to play the sport. You are on skates... two thin little pieces of steel inserted into a boot like footwear. A stick? A puck?
A big guy covering a small net?
You take almost any other sport and you can become decent enough to play a game with your friends.... not hockey though.

I played/play a number of sports besides hockey, soccer, baseball, basketball, badminton, volleyball, (unfortunately never played real football because we only have high school football and I played too many other sports.)...
And I've learned to pick everyone of these sports up pretty easily.... but if I wear to ask a person to start playing hockey, they'd be completely and utterly lost.
I guess that's why I think hockey is superior to most, if not all other sports.

No question that hockey players are talented. Just the skating part alone is hard enough to do, let alone handle the puck, check people, etc.

Too bad hockey doesn't have much of an audience compared to the other big sports in America.

Hands down, College Football.

College Football has more problems than any other sport out there, if you ask me... it's great, but still...

College Football is definately awesome. I rarely watch football, but I must say it's awesome.
But it's like any amatuer sport. It has heart, determination and all those characterists of players trying to make it big.
I just finished watching the Memorial Cup, (if you don't know what it is, it's the Canadian National Major Junior hockey tournament) and it was awesome because you can tell the guys have heart compared to most professional players.
Guys were diving all around the ice just to make that last ditch effort to clear the puck out of the zone, or to keep the other team gaining the offensize zone. Guy going full bore into guys, not holding back anything... using what energy they have left even in a double overtime period just to recreate a 2 on 1...
Man, do I ever want to be on the ice right now.

Football. It keeps Liverpool from invading and taking over Manchester.

But seriously, Football by a long, long shot.

But WHY?... I guess is the main question. Not just because you've played it or watched it since you were young. Although, like I said, is mostly the case.

Ditto and everything you said sums up how I feel.

The players have to be in excellent shape to be skating around all the time and getting checked into the boards. Plus they have all of this equipment on and they are skating on these little blades. Then you have to learn how to skate while contolling the puck (which took me a while to get used to  ).

I agree with you, trying to score past a large goalie is really hard to do.

im going with basketball. preferably the nba playoffs. the intensity of some of these games is amazing. there is a constant battle between the players on the court and between the coaches on the sideline. take a look at the pistons/heat series: game one pistons pretty much held d. wade in check. so van gundy made the adjustment to get him the ball at the top of the key so he could see where the double team was coming from. after that, d wade goes crazy in game 2 and 3. last night larry brown made the adjustments and the pistons won the game. i cant wait to see what happens next.

This is the kind of answer I like to see from people.
I was going to go into the details about hockey, but I think the major ones were enough.
The minor ones are so numerous it would be hard to post even a small fraction of them.

GH... I'm just asking people which sport THEY THINK is the greatest.
These are opinions.. not facts.

Skating while stickhandling a puck is harder to do than almost anything in any other sport. Albeit it's not hard for me to do now... it's actually extremely easy for me to do.

Any sport that you can do while drinking beer is my winner.

Forgot to mention Tennis. I've never played it competitvely, but I know how difficult it is. I picked it up about 6 or 7 years ago.. haven't played too much, but jees it's hard. Good pick, parchy.

i dont think ANY sport is as good as it used to be. ITs just not the same, the business side is so public and so in your face that it robs the players and games of the magic..... Im jealous of the fans who got to see the greats of the 50's and 60's....when the best of the best were pure legends and n oone talked about the money they made or what tv show or shoe they had....

I cant imagine being a yankee fan and watching and rooting for the Dimaggios and Mantles, or watching Jack Robinson and Koufax and Mays and guys that people you would go to a game and just watch the way they played the game, where they stood, how they chased down a ball, played the feild, hit with 2 strikes.....does any player today inspire that sort of thing? I dont think so...Bonds? his controversies outway his playing now. Poo Holes? Miggy? Even Griffey doesnt do it anymore.

Then you can add any sport to that list.
Recreational hockey leagues aren't considered "beer leagues" for no reason.
