as many already know, im not that good with computers. anyway, ive got windows XP home and im sure there is some stuff on my computer that i dont need and would free up a good amount of hard drive space, i just dont know what. ive already gotten rid of AOL(i think) and internet explorer because i use firefox so i didnt need ether of them. but i was hoping that someone might know what i can delete or uninstall to give myself some more space, any help would be great.

here's a good way to free up some space:

go into my computer
right click on your hard drive
click properties
run disk cleanup

it doesnt give me enough, i only have like 4% hard drive space, and ive done the disk clean up. ive got like 400MB left of almost 19 gigs, ive been doing alot of downloading recently but i dont think its but 2 or 3 gigs at the most, so what out of the rest of the 16 gigs is pointless

Go to Remove programs and remove all you don't use or need.

the problem is that im unsure what my computer needs, there is alot of stuff that i dont think ive ever used, but isnt there some stuff that if i delete will mess up the workings of my computer?

here is a list of stuff in the remove programs list that i dont think i have ever used
adobe acrobat 5.0 15.68mb
compaq client manager .81mb
compaq easy access buttons 3.00 B3 .72mb
compaq wireless LAN 1.23mb
encarta online .80mb
intervideo windvd 18.41mb
microsoft money 2002 144.00mb
microsoft money 2002 system pack 5.95mb
microsoft works 6.0 94.81mb
quicktime 1.91mb
RTLset up .79mb
setup compaq software 401.00mb

there are a few more that dont even tell a size so i didnt list them, but even all that isnt that much space if it can all be deleted, but tell me what can please

do you have a cd-burner?

if so, burn that stuff to a cd. sure it may not read as fast when you use it, but itll free up space. only having 400mb of space left isnt the wisest of things.

you mean put all the programs i listed on cd and just put the cd in when i need the stuff?
i could try that, i was just hopeing that there was somehting that i didnt use and didnt know about that was taking up a ton of space, i have a few things like my cd burn program, party poker and things like that on my computer but all of the stuff like that i have is probably less then a gig. i made a thread about an external hard drive last week, and i still plan on doing that soon, but i have a bad habit of spending my extra money on music and movies instead of stuff i could use more, so i dont have the money at the moment. so i was looking for a temp. fix till i do get one.

well it seems to me you have alot of stuff that doesnt have to be on your hard drive.

i have a ton of shit also, but my hard drive isnt close. i have a 40 gig hd with 7.9 still unused, and that has about 1100 mp3's, about 120 cd's burned as mp3's, ms office 2003, adobe 6.0 professional, photoshop 8.0 suite, macromedia suite and a few other programs.

take the individual files, such as mp3s, shn or whatever else, and burn those to a cd or dvd

what does the adobe acrobat do?

and mocrosoft money doesnt have anyhitng to do with my computers running right? so i can get rid of it since ive never used it?

and same question for microsoft works, ive never used it.

i can put all my downloaded music to cd in MP3 form and it would free up alot of space, but i was trying to keep it on there so it could be shared, but i guess i could do it for now and when i get an external hard drive i could just put it back on then, does that sound like a good idea?

adobe acrobat 5.0 15.68mb - used for PDF files; get rid of it if you've never used it to this point (which would surprise me)
compaq client manager .81mb - delete it
compaq easy access buttons 3.00 B3 .72mb - delete it
compaq wireless LAN 1.23mb
encarta online .80mb - delete it
intervideo windvd 18.41mb - if you have WMP, delete this
microsoft money 2002 144.00mb - delete it
microsoft money 2002 system pack 5.95mb - delete it
microsoft works 6.0 94.81mb - delete it (unless you don't have Office)
quicktime 1.91mb - keep it
RTLset up .79mb - ??
setup compaq software 401.00mb - delete it

Jason you should seriously look into a bigger hard drive. I grappled with a 19GB one for years, and I recently got an 80GB Western Digital on sale with a rebate for like $30. Made one partition for Windows and program files, one for all my music and media, and formatted the old one, so now I've got space galore when I need it.

if you have USB 2.0, it should be nice and quick. since you only have a 20GB hard drive that makes me think the computer is a few years old, before USB 2.0 was on every computer.

if you don't have USB 2.0, that hard drive will be too slow. But you can buy a USB 2.0 PCMCIA for $30-40, and it'll run just fine.

I know you have a compaq laptop, but what model and when was it made?

i have a usb2 card for my cd burner, so i should be good there.

as far as how old the computer is, im not totaly sure, i got it because right before my 4 year warrenty ran out on my old one the screen went bad on it so they ended up replaceing it for me, and that was about 2 years ago, im not sure if it was bran new or referbished or somehting like that.
the model is one i havent heard of before but it is Evo N1015v, ever heard of it?

but if you say that that one should be to bad then i might get it because its a pretty good price it seems.

adobe is for reading pdf files, something that happens every now and then if youre doing research. the reader in and of itself isnt that big of a space hog on your HD, so i wouldnt worry about getting rid of it
