WOW. I knew Polanco was on his way out, but I thought for sure it was going to be the Dodgers or Cubs. I was shocked to see the Tigers sneak in.
Not quite sure what the deal is with Urbina. I know he was hurt, but is healthy again and pitching somewhat well. Wonder where he is going to fit in here. I guess he'll be the set-up guy?
Don't know anything about this Martinez kid. MLB.com says he plays 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base, and Shortstop. Never heard of him though. And he was born in Philly to boot.
Sorry to see you go Placido, but since it means Chase gets to play everyday now, BYE BYE, Good Luck in Motown.

Good idea with this one. On principle it's a great trade because Utley gets to beast it up everyday now. Urbina is having a solid year and with Phillies run support Urbina will be even better... I bet Martinez will end up sucking balls though
I would have traded Urbina for prospects instead of a guy who'll be a FA after this year.

I don't know that their situation is important since they won't be making the playoffs this year anyway, and polanco is old, immensely replaceable and a free agent after this year, but they don't need a third baseman and they have tony giarratano, one of their top prospects, on the big league team now. it makes a lot more sense to me to try him out at second since guillen is probably the AL's second best SS.
My theory today is that the NL wild card is actually not going to come out of the east because all those teams are just going to beat the crap out of each other.
My other theory is that the phillies are going to sneak up and win this division.

3 major factors that will go into this being a good deal.
As long as Martinez does not start any games at 2nd, Urbina doesn't shit the bed like every middle reliever that Wade gets and Martinez plays well at 3rd if Bell's back goes out again.
I'll take anything to get Geary out of that bullpen.

Polanco is old? 29 is old?
Why did the Tigers make this trade?
Omar Infante, hitting .114 in his last 12 games
thats why i think.
Martinez is just a throw in, i beleive the Tigers overpaid in giving him a 2 year deal, and by including him the phillies get a multi positional infielder as a reserve, and the Tigers save some useless salary.
Urbina has been very good this year, but ultimately he is tradeable because of Percival (hopefully), Farnsworth, Walker and German- who have all been able to get guys out this year.
The Tigers traded from their position of strength (bullpen) to get a player in an area they sorely needed help in.
