is there a way to get rid of the short cut thing (the white square with the arrow) when you make a shortcut in windows?

nope, that signifies it is indeed a shortcut, unless you open the .ico file in paint, and get rid of it pixel by pixel, save it, and change the icon file in properties

actually yeah, Tweak UI

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/down ... rtoys.mspx

FYI, the arrow isn't actually part of the icon. it gets drawn on for shortcuts. this lets you disable that or change it to a smaller, transparent arrow.

powertoys also has an image resizer, someone around here needed one of those.

your way doesn't work. you can edit the icons all you want, but the arrows aren't part of the icon.

Good point. You get brownie points for playing. Collect enough brownie points and you can pick something out of the treasure box!

I think it's a historical thread - Peeps was wrong for the first time ever.

Don't you work in some sort of ITS department? I fear for your users. :P

little follow up, i ran tweak ui and it screwed with my icons. a quick change in regedit will fix it, but if your icons look like 16-color versions after this, check this out

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairicons.htm

to open the registry editor, click start->run and type regedit.

That's some kind of ITS mantra.
