Anyone who has ever sprained their ankle pretty badly knows how bad they blow. I've sprained my ankles probably 2 dozen times in my life, 4-5 times I've had severe (grade 3) sprains. I figured I'd tell you my latest little incident which is pretty funny.

I play in a basketball league and during a game this past thursday I jump up and come down on someone's foot. Usually I can shake it off but this one was pretty bad, I had to sit out the rest of the game. The next morning I can't walk at all, can't even put any weight on it so I go to the hospital incase it's broken. Turns out just to be a bad sprain, they give me some crutches and a Rx for 15 vicodin and send me on my way. Friday and Saturday I needed to use the crutches, Sunday I could walk with a limp and Monday it started really feeling better.

Well, my lawn was getting pretty long yesterday so I decided to mow it. I'm halfway through and started thinking how much better my ankle felt now that I gave it some work. I thought I'd even be able to play a few minutes at my game tonight. About 10 seconds later I turn to pull the mower and completely roll my ankle as the weight shifts to my right leg. At first anger hits me because of what i did, then the pain hit. I start cursing and yelling as I make my way into my house, I had neighbors staring in disbelief. Now my ankle is hurting just as bad as when it first happened and it swelled to double the size as it was yesterday....it looks like a softball. Right before I went out to mow the lawn wifey told me not to, get someone to do it. I say "No, I'm fine, its just cutting the lawn"

I've been sitting here in pain all day hating myself.

This was my left ankle a few years ago after a basketball injury:

Yeah, that sucked. I was on the shelf for months.

I sprained my ankle pretty bad not too long ago. My ankle was swollen for over a month. It looked like Bammer's picture. The pain sucked.

I know your pain. I have sprained my left ankle so many times, that it's permanantly swollen. It sucks. It pretty much keeps me from playing basketball as much as I'd like to.

I'm pretty sure my ankle's never going to fully recover. It REALLY sucks. I can hardly jump & touch the rim anymore.

Mine is similar to the picture, maybe an inch more across.

The worst one I ever had was 3 years ago, I had a high ankle sprain. My leg was red, purple and black from my foot all the way up to the middle of my lower leg. Fucker took 3 1\2 months to heal. The wierdest thing is I didn't seem to turn it that bad I did it making a move on someone out past the 3 point line, it just shifted wierd. the pain just got increasingly bad until it was a constant throbbing mess.

I can still jump. It's the landing that concerns me. :?

No...you actually secure it under the inner sole-lining of the shoe, then it's velcro on the part that extends from the shoe.

ok, mac, i just giggled at ya, only cause i can relate....

i havent really sprained mine all that bad recently, but when i first moved out to cali years ago, i was back on defense and they threw the one guy mike a lop. as im backpeddling i jump and get my fingertips on the ball to deflect it, but on coming down from all 7 inches of leap i have, i watched in horror as i came down on the side of my ankle. it rolled immediately and i started dry heaving before i even hit the ground.

if youve never sprained your ankel before, your first reaction is to untie your shoe and see if your foot is in two or three pieces. now if you have sprained y our ankle, you know thats the last thing you should do, instead tie it as tight as possible to keep the blood out.

the next day, my ankle was roughly the size of the picture above, and a few shades of black more. three days later, my stepmother who was working at a foot dr (who actually counted micheal chang as his client) told me dr lee wanted to see it.

he determined it wasnt broke but wasnt a light sprain either. within a week, it looked like a rotting peach, just black as all get out.

i worked 2 miles away from where i lived and didnt have a car out there, so i had to ride my bike. probably the best thing i could have done. it causes your ankle to move, but doesnt strain it.

since then, id say probably about two dozen times have i tweaked both of em

I played football in college and last year thought I'd play a bit of flag football at the local athletic club. I figure I'm good for it because I'm playing against all of these 35 year old dads and shit. Well on the first play I roll my ankle badly. The kind where you can hear it. Needless to say I hobbled out in shame.

now I always where my lace up ankle braces just in case. It's such a shitty injury, you'd almost rather have broke something.

most drs will say, if the sprain is bad enough, breaking it is better.

when you sprain it, you tend to think you can be back on it playing in 2 weeks, but the mental part of the injury can go on for months and you only hurt it more trying to over-compensate

i fucked mine up tonite, and it sucks, cause im playing 4 nights a week now.

2 on 2 break, guy on my team with the ball comes in from the wing baseline, and loops me a pass around his guy, i go up for the layup, and i come down on my guys foot. it fucking popped.

so im flopping on the floor like a whale outta water, when someone says, hey you ok?

i look up and say, no, i usually fall to the floor, slamming my hands against it screaming in agony for no good reason.

i iced it up and have it wrapped now. im probably taking the week off from ball :(
