MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Two teenagers could get up to six months in jail if convicted of charges they killed two groundhogs, one of which was doused with gasoline and set ablaze.
Christopher Welch, 18, and a 17-year-old male whose name was not released by police were arrested Friday on animal cruelty charges at Middletown High School South.
Police said that on June 4, the two shot and killed a young groundhog with a paint ball gun, and then shot and wounded its mother. They then struck the mother with a large piece of wood, trapped it in a net, took it into the woods and set it ablaze while it was still alive, police said.
The attack was remarkable for its cruelty, said Victor Amato, chief law enforcement officer for the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
“On a scale of one to 10, it’s up there around nine, 10,” he told the Asbury Park Press for Wednesday’s newspapers. “It’s how they killed it. It’s so unnecessary.”

You all obviously didn't grow up in South Dakota, where you can probably be fined for not killing groundhogs. I am not among those likely to sustain emotion for something just because it is a part of my past, and thank goodness because SD fucking sucks. A good example of what I'm talking about is a time I was riding shotgun with a guy on the interstate (which means no human beings were around for miles), and he pulled over and pulled out his hunting rifle to shoot a dog. A fucking dog. Blew its fucking hindquarters nearly completely off, and it was rolling around trying to run away.
But then, this was around the area of the scariest fucking place I've ever been in my life. A cement bunker in the middle of nowhere, filled to the brim with weapons of all kinds. This guy ("Crazy Al") had working anti-tank weaponry setup out front, and left the place unlocked because all his clients would just shuffle in at all hours to drink vodka and test the new guns. There were schwastikas on the wall and most of his best clients were the local cops. I moved outta town.
But back to groundhogs. I've heard, seen, and known worse, time and again. South Dakota is for sucks.

I think there is a hell for sickos like this
I'd be amazingly surprised if these kids get 6 months of prison time for this. Enforcing and penalizing animal cruelty laws is usually way down the totem pole for the justice system, and rarely do people get much more than a slap on the wrist the first time around. I'm guessing probation, maybe some sort of mandatory counciling, and a fine.

You see, I don't really understand this sort of behavior. But I have friends and family members who still get off somehow from shooting turtles and running over armadillos. I shot a dove once and felt like shit, so I don't kill anything. But the fact that some people feel no remorse or connection to less intelligent animals does not reflect on how they treat others. One of the people I am talking about loves to hunt, but he also is an EMS worker, worked dispatch, and worked as a nurse. Yes most serial killers started with torturing animals, but not all pot smokers end up taking heroin. I don't think that animal cruelty is a gateway drug.

There's a difference between killing (as in hunting, or even that weird turtle slaughter you allude to) and torturing an animal that is still alive. That's what has been shown to lead to violence towards people.
I mean would you want, for example, someone to be the Senate majority leader who lied to animal shelters so he could get cats to experiment upon in his free time when he was in medical school? Of course you wouldn't.

What he did though was understandable, because I like to believe he did it to improve his knowledge of medicine. I myself, couldn't stitch up someones lip. I'm not completly defending these people. What they did was pretty damn fucked up, and there should be a level of punishment that teaches them that there are consequences for being a sick fuck. But I know a shit load of people run over animals out of sport, shoot turtles and rabbits, and it has nothing to do with hunting. It doesn't mean they are evil ass holes. They just don't see inferior animals as anything more then feelingless playtoys. That doesn't mean that they have the same discontent for human life. Again, I think it is sick as hell, but evaluating their treatment of animals on occasion against how they are in their normal lives, gives them a bit of leeway in my opinion.
I personally only kill scorpions, spiders, and snakes, because I am convinced that such evil scary fucks were sent straight from hell. And I do not defend the behavior of animal abusers, but like any other crime with the exception of a few, education works much better then sticking them in the 8th ring of hell.

I seriously don't understand the wanton murder of any animal. If you dig hunting, fine, at least its "reasonably" humane and in most cases people i know eat what they kill. It's not for me but i don't rail against it. But you always read about some sick kids torturing and killing cats/dogs/rabbits or any other lower life form they can get their hands on, and for what? A cheap thrill, a feeling of dominance or are they truly that sick that they enjoy another beings misery so much?
Last year i was driving down a dark rural road in my truck when a caught sight of a furry blob out of the corner of my eye as it darted under my front wheel. I stopped and got out to see what it was because there were houses around and it could have been someones dog or cat. But it wasn't. It was a young racoon, maybe a year old....but i hadn't killed it. No, when i found it, i then realized that i had just crushed it's lower half. The thing was sitting there screeching and having a fit flailing itself around trying to drag its destroyed lower half off the road. I was almost sick to my stomach because i realized what i had to do. I got back in my truck and forced myself to finish the job. It took 3 goddamn tries before the thing finally died. I felt miserable. Now i wouldn't call myself an animal lover or anything but having to deal with what i did, with the image of that racoon writhing in the road and screeching i felt pretty godamned miserable. So it makes me question the headspace of someone who would derive pleasure from an experience like that. Fuck that kids will be kids bullshit.
