Bill Buckner's name has been brought up a lot now that the Red Sox have finally won a World Series championship after an 86-year drought.
But after becoming the whipping boy of the Red Sox nation over a crucial error in Boston's last trip to the World Series in 1986, Buckner doesn't want anyone saying he's now "forgiven" for his mistake.
"I don't want to bring a downer on the whole situation because I'm very happy for the Boston Red Sox ... and they certainly deserved to win the World Series this year." Buckner said on Sporting News Radio's James Brown Show.
"I'm just a little disappointed with the whole thing. This whole thing about being forgiven and clearing my name, you know, I mean ... cleared from what? What did I do wrong? It's almost like being in prison for 30 years and then they come up with a DNA test to prove that you weren't guilty.
"I've gone through a lot of, what I feel, undeserved bad situations for myself and my family over a long period of time, and for someone to come up to me and say, 'Hey, you're forgiven.' I mean, it just kind of brings a really bad taste in my mouth."
There has been talk in some circles of trying to include Buckner in this year's victory celebration, but Buckner made it clear where he stood on that notion.
"Not a chance. Not a chance," Buckner said. "There are a lot of great people in New England and great fans, and obviously they're very passionate about their team. This is their championship; this is what they did, and I'm happy for them. But my team in '86 didn't win and this team did."

I laughed for ten minutes solid when they did a crowd shot last night to some folks with a "We forgive you, Bill Buckner" sign. I do feel bad for the guy, and I sure as hell wouldn't want to participate if I was him.
But if he had just kept his glove on the ground...

the game would have been tied and went to extra innings....
Why Boston fans hate Buckner so much is beyond me. The guy played his heart out every game. A lot of Sox fans are really petty when it comes to Buckner

The Boston fans that hate him are the same idiots who go nuts and flip cars in the streets after the Red Sox win. I'm guessing there are plenty of reasonable Sox fans that don't hate him.

The guy's life was pretty much ruined for a long time because he missed a ground ball. It's funny that game 7 of the 86' series is never mentioned or any other of the games they lost. Nice fans, really. Screw boston
It seems that it is not common knowledge that the game was tied at that point. And the way the Boston bullpen was going, I think that if Buckner makes that play, they still lose the game.
The Mets had momentum and were at home. How 'bout blaming the picthers that let New York back into that game. Buckner's error was bad, but its signficance is overrated.

I think it's more of an excuse to why we lost. It's equivalent to the curse, no one really believes it, but it's more interesting/satisfying than saying the Red Sox just couldn't win (couldn't is the key word.) Just like Cubs fans blaming Steve Bartman for losing the NLCS last year. It's rediculous, but easy way to cope.
I'm not trying to justify the death threats or any actual harm done to Bucks, thats just retarded. I'm just attempting to explain it.
