I was going to restrict this to major professional sports, but I think it will be more fun if we include colleges too. To be a major professional team with a stupid name though earns extra points for prominence of the stupidity.
Right there. When your team is named after the city, and then you move to a new city, and your team name doesn't make sense anymore, YOU CHANGE THE TEAM NAME!!! New Orleans Jazz? Dumb but appropriate. Utah Jazz? The most un-jazzy place in America.

I should have mentioned, that I don't want this to be any kind of cut on the team itself or the town they're from (even though I did cut on Utah a bit by calling them un-jazzy). Focus on the name please.

I think we should trade back mascots with New Orleans:
At least, hornets or bees would at least have some revelance to Utah.

Yeah, that one probably wouldn't fly in this day and age. Considering the Washington Bullets changed their name because of the jokes about DC's murder rate.

I can kind of remember when they were doing the "name the team" thing when Toronto first got a team... as far as I can remember, it got narrowed down to the Raptors or the Beavers.
