Pot-flavored candy
takes a licking

Anti-drug forces angry over
treats made with hemp oil
Marijuana-flavored lollipops with names such as Purple Haze, Acapulco Gold and Rasta are showing up on convenience stores shelves around the country.

ATLANTA - Marijuana-flavored lollipops with names such as Purple Haze, Acapulco Gold and Rasta are showing up on the shelves of convenience stores around the country, angering anti-drug advocates.

“It’s nothing but dope candy, and that’s nothing we need to be training our children to do,” said Georgia state Sen. Vincent Fort, who has persuaded some convenience stores to stop selling the treats.

The confections are legal, because they are made with hemp oil, a common ingredient in health food, beauty supplies and other household products. The oil imparts a marijuana’s grassy taste but not the high.

Merchants call them a harmless novelty for adults and insist they advise stores to sell only to people 18 and older.

“There are more than 70 million people in the United States who smoke marijuana. We’re catering to the audience of people who are in that smoking culture,” said Rick Watkins, marketing director for Corona, Calif.-based Chronic Candy, which uses the slogan “Every lick is like taking a hit.”

An Atlanta company called Hydro Blunts markets a similar product under the name Kronic Kandy, which is made in the Netherlands.

New York City Councilwoman Margarita Lopez introduced a resolution condemning the candies when she saw them at convenience stores near schools in her district. She plans to hold hearings this summer.

At Junkman’s Daughter, an Atlanta novelty shop, the suckers are sold near the cash register from a bucket labeled with a marijuana leaf.

“We’ve got probably every weird kind of candy there is in here,” owner Pam Majors said. “If it was anything you could get high off of, we wouldn’t carry it, obviously.”

I don't know, I used to smoke pot on a fairly regular occasion and never did I think, "Mmmm, this tastes fantastic!" I really want a cigarette every now and then, but I don't feel the need to lick an ashtray.

I've been to Amsterdam, thank you. I know the difference between schwag and good shit. However, never have I thought I wanted a candy with pot flavor. It's just not that tasty.

I've had one of those... the "Pot Suckers" in the picture in the first thread.

Now let me say, I love pot very, very much... but that was the most god awful candy i've ever tasted. I couldn't stand keeping it in my mouth for more than 3 seconds. They didn't get the actual taste of pot, they got the smell of it in taste form, if that makes any sense.

absolutely terrible. But I have tasted good pot flavored candy... it was a chewy fruit snack kind of thing. They weren't too bad.

State wants to weed out marijuana-flavor candy

Wed Jul 13, 8:21 AM ET

Connecticut Tuesday joined a growing effort to weed out marijuana-flavored candy from store shelves when its attorney general said he would sponsor a statewide ban on "Pot Suckers" lollipops.

Five other states have either banned or are considering a ban on the candy, causing New Jersey distributor ICUP to suspend further sales of the green candy as of June 28.

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said the candy was being sold in novelty stores in large malls throughout the state, marketed with slogans such as "Every lick is like taking a hit."

The candy, which is flavored with hemp essential oil, does not contain THC, the hallucinogenic compound in marijuana, but Blumenthal called it "a gateway product" that "glamorizes drugs for children."

The candy has been banned by the Chicago City Council and in Suffolk County, New York. The New York City Council and the states of Michigan, New Jersey and Georgia are considering legislation to ban them.

ICUP president Steve Trachtenberg said reaction to the Pot Suckers "borders on ridiculous."

"Is it a novelty? Yes. Was it meant to encourage kids to use drugs? Absolutely not," he said, noting that more than 70 percent of U.S. candy consumption is by adults.

Trachtenberg said that in addition to suspending distribution of Pot Suckers because of the backlash, his company has put on hold plans for related items, including a hemp-flavored chocolate candy Buzz Bar.

Other marijuana-flavored candy products have found their way to the market place in recent months including "Kronic Kandy," made in the Netherlands and sold in the Atlanta area, and items from the Mary Jane Candy Company including "Ganja Pops" and "Icky Sticky Nuggets."

This reminds me of hop-flavored candy that I saw at a beer festival. If anyone sees something like that, get me a website or something.

It's been banned in the City of Chicago as well.

They are making a HUGE deal about these in the NYC news market. I've seen stories about them the last couple of days. Its kind of funny, because I hadnt heard of them before hearing about them on the news. And now I want to try one. Does the news media ever think that they will actually create demand for "taboo" things by convering it?
