Can anyone recommend some jazz musicians/bands that would be cool to start listening to? I've heard random jazz stuff through the years, but I have never really gotten into it. Lately, I've just had this craving for it, but I don't know where to start. Suggestions, welcome! Thanks in advance...

I'm still discovering jazz myself but i've found you cant go wrong with miles davis and john coltrane.

I have another question, which is probably pretty stupid, but...What's the difference between blues and jazz?

Ummm... blues is like BB King, or Lightnin' Hopkins, or Koko Taylor... or Stevie. Though Stevie was more on the rock side than blues side.

More guitar driven. Signature guitar scales (you cannot mistake a blues scale for anything else). Usually (bad) vocals which somehow sound good. Dirtier. Not sure how to describe it.

Jazz is much more improv. Often incorporates trumpets and sax. Drumming is very distinctive. More use of brushes. Songs tend to go for longer. Much more emphasis on musicianship.

You're gonna have to feel them out. Kind of Blue is an awesome start for jazz.

Try one of the Alligator collections for blues...

Your initial question was answered by the first response. Anyone who has ever asked me for a first jazz album, I suggest Miles Davis "Kind of Blue". It's everything you could ever hope for in jazz, and one of the best albums I've ever heard no matter the genre.

Another good one to check out is A Love Supreme by John Coltrane. That's the one that really got me. 8)

If you're willing to check more albums from Miles Davis I would suggest Bitches Brew and Birth of the Cool. They're both amazing.

Try "Time Out" by Dave Brubeck. Another landmark jazz album containing "Take Five" considered one of the great jazz tracks.
