i was watching a sox game the other night on the screens at the gym, i THINK it was on espn. anyway, the commentators were so busy talking about fucking babe ruth that they missed the last two outs entirely, only realizing when it was time to go to commercial that the inning was over.
i want to watch the game, and hear about the game at hand. i don't give a fuck about a fat ass, dead baseball player who has no relevance to said game that i am watching.
end rant

national games suck. boston games are all about the babe. philadelphia games it's always cheesteaks and booing santa claus. packers games ar a brett farve dick-sucking contest, broncos games are can this qb be the next john elway, etc...
no one does their homework anymore and it's all dumbed down. i hate watching a natioanlly broadcasted game anymore.

Why would they still ramble on about Babe Ruth? The curse is over, that was the only point to it, wasn't it? Unless they want to just talk about how it was the worst lineup move in the history of sports.

I'm sure it was partially about the curse... but it's also about Babe Ruth being the best baseball player to ever play the game.

True, but if they want to talk about Babe being the best ever, that should mostly be done with Yankee games. Your average fan wouldn't even know Babe was a Red Sox player without the whole "curse".

That's a good point.

do you guys think he was actually the greatest, or that he was just so much better than anyone before him that it just seems that way?
If it weren't for Babe Ruth, there would be no million dollar athletes in the world today. He is single-handedly responsible for resurrecting baseball from the Black Sox scandal and growing it to unimagined levels of popularity. Baseball's success enabled the success of football, basketball, hockey, and basically every other sport that anyone does professionally except boxing.
He was so much better than everyone else in his era that it is a good argument to say he was the greatest player ever, but his importance to sport in general as a cult of personality isn't even approached by anyone else before or since. That makes him the greatest athlete in history. The only reason that he came in second to Jordan on the ESPN top 50 was because ESPN is obligated by contract to suck the sweat off of Michael's balls.

I concur.
He was also a drunk and a womanizer. He was the the first modern athlete.
