OK, here's a little request I have that might turn into a discussion.
We're having a Patriots Day here at the Boys & Girls Club where I work tomorrow. I want to get a list of people that could be considered "patriots". We all know the obvious answers, like Jefferson, Washington, etc., but I want to also include some more uncommon names in the fold.
I think MLK Jr. would easily qualify. Any other good names to throw around?

Edit: In response to your question GH, I would say Nathan Hale would be a good choice. He may not get mentioned up there with the big names, but his youthful energy had an impact on the revolution. A patriot indeed.

haha are you serious? get an education. people like you probably call the soldiers patriots too. hate to break it to you, but brain-washing the poor into thinking they are fighting for freedom is not patriotic. What the fuck is up your guys' asses? It's a fucking vague word. How about "important Americans" or even "greatest Americans?" Patriotism, and being a patriot, has lost all meaning in this day of Support the Troops magnets and flag waving. Someone might think that anti-war people are more patriotic than pro-war people. It's a subjective term. Some people think MLK is a patriot--well, head down south and ask some people around there what they think of him. Maybe head by a Klan rally, and ask who some of their patriots are. I don't know where you two get off calling me a dipshit for no apparent reason.

You tell them to get an education? Do you know what the word patriot even means?
Regardless of the reasons for any war, fighting for your country is patriotic. Even more so when the soldiers in question don't believe in the causes for the war.

OK, well, I think a soldier that wouldn't fight because he didn't believe in the causes for war is more of a patriot than those who blindly follow orders. So what does that tell you about the word being vague and meaningless?

actually, that happens in pretty much every country in the world.
then again, every country needs to find the historic characters that better fit the description of patriotic so that they can have someone(s) to look up to... just for the sake of tradition at least.

Your arguments are so full of conjecture and oversimplification that it is impossible to have a coherent conversation with you. Who said ANYTHING about killing innocent foreigners? If you want to get in an argument with someone about the validity of some war, go somewhere else.
The word Patriot is only as vague as you make it. A patriot is someone who puts their country ahead of their own life, and sacrifices for the good of the cause. Many soldiers and leaders did this in the revolution and throughout history. It's a fact.
