Saw this on the news yesterday:

Did you know?

The US government is still charging a relatively small tax for using your land line telephone? It only amounts to pennies per call, but nationwide it generates about $6 billion/year.

The tax was started to fund a war that ended 107 years ago (I forget which war). Anyway, the tax is still alive and kicking, and Americans are paying taxes to fund a war that no longer exists. Clinton vetoed a bill to repeal the tax in 2000.

Damn, that's shady.

That's like the little old couple still leasing their big black, dial phone from the phone company for $40 a month. :(

So, you mean there are taxes that were started to fund a particular thing...but now that particular thing no longer needs funding and we still have the tax?
I bet the list of taxes like this could fill volumes of encyclopedia.

I wouldn't be surprised. I bet that money now goes to buying Senator's yachts and the like...

Just cancel your phone service. Problem solved.
