HP Expected to Announce Massive Layoffs

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Hewlett-Packard Co. is widely expected to cut thousands of jobs next week as part of a long-expected restructuring that will attempt to bring the computer maker's costs in line with business and its rivals' numbers, according to industry analysts.
The exact timing and number of layoffs isn't known, though observers speculate layoffs could range between 5,000 and 25,000 positions. The huge company, whose offerings range from digital cameras and printers to computers and corporate consulting, has 150,000 workers worldwide.
Alexa Hanes, an HP spokeswoman, declined to comment Friday on "rumors and speculation." Some HP workers have taken to calling the upcoming news "the Big One," according to the San Jose Mercury News.
In a research report Thursday, Moors & Cabot analyst Cindy Shaw said a management reorganization could be announced as early as Monday — and could include as many as 25,000 job cuts. She also said the company might announce the expected retirement of Chief Financial Officer Bob Wayman.

Silicon Valley's economy has yet to recover from the 2000 election and 2001 Sept. 11 attack impact on commerce/spending... this layoff, if the numbers are accurate, is huge, even if it closer to the 5,000 number.

Carly Fiorina should be in jail. What is this, number 4 she has run into the ground? How many jobs did Lucent lose again? 30,000? And she did all for the stockholders.

HP employs roughly 150,000 people around the world and 75,000 in the US. Yeah it sucks that they are cutting jobs but a hell of a lot more people would be without jobs if HP went under or didn't exist.
Everyone praises capitalism's push towards efficiency; this is its side effect. Do you want it or not?

They could all move to Delhi and get jobs with Dell customer service
Basically HP's quality control sucks ass.
If "efficency" meant eliminating middle and upper middle management many of the companies in the US would be more profitable and there would be less bullshit attached to making business decisions.
How many vice presidents does a company really need?

Bah! That's a boogey man argument! I bet this move isn't to keep HP from going under, it's to keep profits big for a small number of people.

These layoffs are in part due to the fact that HP decided to compete in the computer market against Dell. HP makes printers not computers. This is why the CEO got the boot earlier this year. HP failed to make a dent in the computer industry, this is the downside of that.
