Star Trek's Scotty dies aged 85

Image

Actor James Doohan, who played the chief engineer Montgomery Scott in Star Trek, has died at the age of 85.

Doohan - whose character responded to the command "Beam me up, Scotty", had been suffering from pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease, his agent said.

His wife of 28 years, Wende, was by his side, Steve Stevens added.

Doohan was a popular character actor when he auditioned for the part in 1966. When the series ended in 1969, he found himself typecast in the role.

I prefer Planet of the Apes to Star Trek.

We'll slip a note into James Doohan's casket so he'll know.

Interesting, he was a veteran of D-Day:

"At 19, James escaped the turmoil at home by joining the Canadian army, becoming a lieutenant in artillery. He was among the Canadian forces that landed on Juno Beach on D-Day. "The sea was rough," he recalled. "We were more afraid of drowning than the Germans."

The Canadians crossed a minefield laid for tanks; the soldiers weren't heavy enough to detonate the bombs. At 11:30 that night, he was machine-gunned, taking six hits: one that took off his middle right finger (he managed to hide the missing finger on the screen), four in his leg and one in the chest. Fortunately the chest bullet was stopped by his silver cigarette case."

Scotty was my fav original cast member.

I met him at a convention. He could not talk anymore, and it took him a full 2 minutes to sign his name on the photo.

I wanted to tell him that he was my favorite cast member, but I was so shocked at how horrible he looked that all I say was "thank you Mr Doohan".

He must have known I wanted to say more, because he got that "Scotty gleam" in his eye and kissed my hand.

My mother was at one of his final conventions in Las Vegas (2002 or 2003). She purchased a pic that was genuinely signed by DeForest Kelley beforehand and eventually got it signed by the entire cast. She said he was a nice man, unlike some members of the cast. The value of that pic just jumped by a few hundred dollars  .

The ironic part is that no one ever, EVER said "Beam me up, Scotty" on the show. Ever.

Also, considering how much of a Trek fan I am, this is a sad, sad day indeed. :(

Here's to thanks for his service to the WORLD. And his sacrifice. Good night Mr. Doohan.
