FAIRFIELD, Ohio -- Vandals tore American flags out of the yard of a dead soldier's family the day after his funeral, then set a car on fire, authorities said.
Army Pfc. Tim Hines died July 14 of complications of injuries he suffered last month in a roadside bombing in Baghdad. His funeral was Friday.
On Saturday, someone pulled the flags out of the family's yard, stuffed them under a car in the driveway and set the whole thing on fire. Firefighters doused the blaze and no one was injured, but the car was destroyed.
No arrests had been made by early Tuesday. Authorities offered a $5,000 reward for tips.
"As we get into this, we feel it was more of a crime of opportunity as opposed to a planned act," Police Chief Mike Dickey told CNN Tuesday morning.
Lt. Ken Colburn, a police spokesman, said authorities hope "that anyone stupid enough to do something like this will be stupid enough to talk about it and someone else will come forward."
Neighbors bought the family new flags. "I went by later that morning, Saturday morning, and there must have been 200 flags that had been brought in and reposted," Dickey said.
The car belonged to the sister-in-law of Hines. Fairfield is in Butler County, 13 miles north of Cincinnati.

Why would you do that to someone?

I grew up in this town...
What the article doesnt tell you is that other cars on the street were also broken into and vandalized the same night. So, it might be a random act of vandalism and not a political statement. Either way, its fucking stupid and wrong.

Because our country has developed a sociopathic hatred for Bush. So much so, that any display of patriotism is seen as support for the indiscriminate killing of Arab civilians. People with "supports our troops" or "proud to be an american" stickers on their car are precieved as revelling in the murder of Iraqi children.
Hate for Bu$hie has become self-hatred and guilt for many Americans and they ignorantly lash out anything that reminds them of their "victimhood". Look at the ridiculous mocking of "red states" when many of those states were >45% Kerry. Or the equally ridiculous theory that all Chirstians are doctor-murdering evolution-hating cavemen. We say things like "the christian right" when we mean "christian extremists" (you would never hear of Muslims being lumped into such a catagory as "the muslim right"). This kind of thinking has a powerful effect on young people, especially those who are not educated enough (or are not blinded by daddy's money) to see all sides of the issues.

Hahha, awesome reporting.
This is typical reporting. Which is why it's so sad.

FAIRFIELD, Ohio -- Police arrested and charged two teens in connection with the vandalism of a fallen soldier's memorial Thursday, News 5's Brian Hamrick reported.
The boys, 13 and 15 years old, were accused of pulling up 20 American flags from Pfc. Timothy Hines' father-in-law's front yard and setting them on fire under a car in the driveway last Saturday.
Police said the boys admitted their involvement in the fire. They were charged with one count of arson each.
Investigators said the boys were not aware that the flags were displayed as a memorial and they felt remorse for their actions, Hamrick reported.
According to police, the boys also admitted their involvement in other acts of vandalism in the area. For those crimes, they were charged with criminal mischief.
The boys were released into the custody of their parents.
Hines' family and neighbors couldn't understand why someone would do that, but Hines' father-in-law thanked the Fairfield Police and Fire departments for their support and quick action.
"We feel that this crime was a random act of violence," said Jim Wessel, Hines' father-in-law. "We are confident that the juvenile justice system will handle this in an appropriate manner."

Bush is not America.
Would you care for a side of crow with that?
