I saw a bumper sticker today that made me roll my eyes. The bumper sticker said "My kid fought in Iraq so your kid could party in college." Now I will admit that sometimes we take the services of our military men and women for granted, but this sticker just pissed me off. It seems to me that sometimes when people defend the military that they are guilt tripping the rest of the public.
I find it very hard to believe that if we didn't have our troops in Iraq that I wouldn't be in college right now earning two degrees. Excuse me for choosing to pursue my education while your child probably chose to enlist. If the sticker said "My kid fought in Iraq so Iraqi kids could go to college" then I would be all for it.
I admire our service men and women, but I don't appreciate being looked down on, otherwise you are going to get a big "fuck you" from me.

Heh, I knew someone would bring that up. I think having a bumper sticker saying "My child is an honor roll student" is on par with "My son/daughter in in the army/navy/marines/air force." Both show the parents' pride for their young ones, but neither are demeaning towards other kids in my opinion.

Most people I know that chose to enlist did it so they afford to go to college. Many people chose to enlist simply because they have no other economic opportunity. Those people are probably terrified for their child’s safety (and rightfully so). Let them express partiotism. Let them "feel superior". There is no reason for you to be bothered by that unless you are suffering for middle-class white male guilt syndrome (I belive this is taught in most colleges now). Everyone has opinions. When we don't allow people to express ideas, no matter how silly they may seem to us, they we are headed towards fascism.

They still chose to go into the military. No one held a gun to their head and forced them into the armed services. There are plenty of ways to afford college, the military just happens to be one of many.

No sorry, I'm not suffering from MCWMGS. I do have a case of "Why are we in Iraq when we have our own problems at home that we are neglecting" disease. Hopefully it's contagious.
