I enjoyed it! I think the contrast between the hero's enlightenment - by the woman he fell in love with - and his disillusionment - by the battles he takes part in during the Civil War - is what drove this film. It's not necessarily a romance epic, nor one displaying all brutality and hate. It takes one man from the depths of one to the other. Jude Law's character was otherwise very blank, but it was the action of the film that showed his human process of growth, in what way growth would progress during a war so ugly from a time so pretty.

I wouldn't say it's the most unique presentation we've ever seen, but it was a good story and Anthony Minghella did a lovely job setting it to screen, scene by scene. Everything worked to make the last scene more significant.

And as usual, Phillip Seymour Hoffman performs brilliantly with what little he has to use, and is unacknowledged. He's always good, and supremely underrated.

good film, nice and depressing hehe. I liked it, but i hated Jude Law's performance, he just wasn't convincing as a southern man, or even an american.

Renee Zelwegger, while i usually am annoyed with her (this is why i don't like Chicago very much), had a really good performance in this one. Seeing Jack white in the film made me laugh, but he was better than Jude Law

Jack White did fucking well for a half-assed musician, in my opinion. Jude Law is a bit lame by default but I enjoyed the movie aside from the undeniable cheese of some scenes.

The casting went pretty deep also. You could name a movie almost every actor had been in previously. rad!

I really liked this movie, and Jack Whites contribution to the soundtrack and the music in general fit really well IMO.

The movie was good, but it obliterated a lot of the underlying themes of redemption and the almost spiritual connection humans have to water. Good movie, phenomenal book.

I don't know anyone who has read this book who liked the movie, and everyone I know who read the book thought it was about the best book they'd read in a year.
