i watched it. i was pleased that it all went well.

the media totally blew this whole thing out of proportion, though. i mean, ther ewere over 100 space shuttle flights that went perfect, and 2 that didn't. this is outer space and it is dangerous.

but i could tell that NASA was really nervous on this one. the engineers were not taking anything for granted, and i really enjoyed hearing about all the new safety measures they created in the past 2 years. very cool, very star trek.

Outside of giving the MIR guys some new company, is there any reason why people are still sent out to space?

Yes, there are experiments done on ths shuttle all the time that need human oversight. There is also a belief that if there aren't people on the craft the public will stop caring and funding could dry up.

Plus if we ever want to actually live in space we need to keep sending people up to try and get around the whole problem of your muscles dissolving.

Glad they made it.

I really don't know if it was necessary to pre-empt ALL other news for the hour prior to touchdown, but ... whatever.

how do we know that what is out there can even be picked up by our primitive telescope? what if what is out there is beyond our current visual understanding?

we have to get out there and see it and feel it for ourselves.

I'd love to take this debate further ... but we should stop derailing.

In consideration of all meathead sports fans such as myself, you could have named this "Discovery lands safely."

The touchdown thing REALLY threw me off.

You really need to do some reading, even if you just refer to the shuttle thread from 3 weeks ago. Microgravity research allows for engineering to absolutely absurd lengths, I wish I had the time to start this argument.

Theres only so much a woman can show you in ten years, even if shes from Thailand. I'd take 10 years contemplating the orgins of the universe, it'd give you pause and maybe we wouldn't need a board for debate.
