Horror is one of my favorite genres, but I never know which are good ones to rent because if a horror movie is bad it tends to be really bad. So what are some good ones that you liked and would recommend?

Horror movies I like:

Texas Chainsaw Massacre-The Original, don't see the new one
Dawn of the dead-The original, I like the remake too, but the original is better
Halloween
Evil Dead-See this movie immediately, actually see Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness too
Night of the living dead-The original, the remake isn't the greatest

Your options are limited to what the rental places will probably have, so stuff like Suspiria or The Beyond is out of the question. You might like the new Toolbox Murders remake, it's by Tobe Hooper (the director of the original TCM). Anything by Takashi Miike is gauranteed to be fucked up and great, but make sure you get the unrated versions of movies like Ichi the Killer and Audition. Near Dark is a great Vampire/Western, and any of the Dead trilogy (Night, Dawn, Day) will be good choices. It'd help to know what movies you've liked in the past.

I was scared shitless the first time I saw each of these three movies:

Psycho
Scream
The Ring

If you enjoy Evil Dead, then you must check out Dead Alive...gorriest movie of all time. More cheesy horror than scary horror though.

I'm not doing this to be a dick, but this has been discussed before and you might find some good recommendations in this thread:

Awesome choices man! I'm not real big on the wave of Japanese horror we've been seeing the past few years but I really do want to check out Audition, I've heard such great things about it, but I can't find it anywhere. I'm hoping to watch the Tobe Hooper Toolbox Murders dvd tonight actually.

On a different note, while I would love to recommend some good horror flicks for you to check out it seems we're already going in the right direction. The Romero and Evil Dead trilogies have already been mentioned, as has the great TCM. In my opinion, the following movies are so terrible that they're good and horror wouldn't be horror without some trashy gems along the way. Some movies so bad that they're good:

Friday the 13th- Halloween did it first and much better but that didn't stop this franchise for one minute. Friday the 13th is basically what people think of when they think of slasher movies and I love the old ones. The writers skimp on the plot, the girls skimp on their clothes and Tom Savini doesn't skimp on the gore. Good summertime camping fun for all!

Night of the Creeps- This B-movie from the 80's is about alien slugs that enter through the mouth, nest in your brain, turn you into a zombie and then blow it off when they hatch. Main characters are named after horror directors and one of the greatest one liners ever.....thrill me.

Fright Night- Vampire flick from the 80's, this was one of the first horror movies I ever saw when I was a kid, and I'm absolutely postive it was the first tit shot I saw in a film. That reason alone is enough for me to treasure the memory of this film but it's also a pretty well done movie, with lots of comedy and camp value thrown in for good measure. Favorite line: "You're so cool Brewster!"

Sleepaway Camp- Another blast from the 80's slasher past, this movie is almost like a parody of the Friday films, taking the main premise of kids at camp getting slaughtered and upping the ante on the kills and pointless nudity. The first one has one of the most underrated twists of all time.

Audition is just OK im my book. It kinda drags, but the last 15 minutes or so is disturbing due to a nice torture scene.

Props to the person who said Dead Alive. I watched that for the first time with a group of like 10 people. We never laughed so hard in our lives.

I liked Texas Chain Saw Massacre (old and new)
Dawn of the Dead - I liked the remake more
Halloween was good
Evil Dead series rocks
Psycho - im the only person in the world who likes the remake more
The Ring was good
Jaws was average

I've def added Sleepaway Camp, Nightmare on Elm and Near Dark to my list. I picked up House on Haunted Hill and Cursed tonight....
