Guess who was at the center of the brouhaha?
Yep, asshat Jeremy Shockey. Big surprise.
Giants, Jets brawl during joint practice
By DAVID PORTER, Associated Press Writer
August 6, 2005
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey got into a fight with two Jets players on the second play of a joint practice between the teams Saturday that also featured an argument between Giants coach Tom Coughlin and Jets defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson.
On the second play of a 9-on-7 drill pitting the Giants offense against the Jets defense, Shockey got in a tussle with defensive backs Erik Coleman and Oliver Celestin, and soon all three players were throwing wild punches.
Coleman and Celestin pulled the Giants tight end to the ground and Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma jumped on top, touching off a melee involving numerous players from both teams. Order was restored after a few minutes.
``I was blocking somebody and I got shoved in the back, and the next thing I know, everybody's fighting,'' Shockey said. ``There's no bad blood. That's how football is. You might as well do it now, when you don't get fined and Paul Tagliabue can't take any money out of your pocket. Do it now, get it over with. I'm sure it happens at every other camp.''
Later in the morning practice session, Coughlin got into an argument with Henderson after several plays in which the Jets appeared to go beyond the prescribed rules of the practice, which allow defensive players to bump or slow down ball carriers as they go by, without tackling them.
Jets safety Kerry Rhodes hit Giants wideout Willie Ponder on a route over the middle, forcing Ponder to leave the practice early with bruised ribs.
Brandon Jacobs, the Giants rookie 6-foot-4, 265-pound running back, retaliated by bowling over 6-2, 212-pound Jets cornerback Pete Hunter after catching a short pass.
And finally, Giants wide receiver Amani Toomer was knocked down by Jets linebacker Eric Barton after a short pass reception. Toomer struck Barton in the helmet, and the two players had to be separated.
``This is practice,'' said Toomer, who is in his tenth NFL season. ``We don't want anyone to get hurt.''
At one point Coughlin yelled at Henderson from about 20 yards away, causing Henderson to respond, ``That's the way we practice, coach. We put our hats on people.''
Jets coach Herman Edwards blamed what he called his team's ``testiness'' on getting up at 4:30 a.m. for a three-hour bus ride from Long Island to the Giants camp here.
Henderson defended his players.
``I don't think any of it was over the line,'' he said. ``You push and shove, and sometimes people take it the second level. But I don't think anyone was intentionally trying to injure anyone. I don't think there was any misunderstanding about what the tempo was going to be. I just think we practice at a different tempo at our place than was expected here.''
Coughlin was not amused by the antics.
``We don't want that. That's not what we teach, that's not why we're here,'' he said. ``We're here to practice to try and get better. We certainly didn't come to fight. We understand that sometimes those things are going to happen, but there were too many occasions.''

I like Shockey for some reason. He's a borderline asshiole which makes him likeable in my eyes. If he crossed over to Winslow territory then i'd probably not like him anymore. He's got great TE skills and is a badass. I'm guessing he's gonna have his best year ever in 2005. I'll take him in the 6th round of any fantasy draft. The only other tight ends you can say that about is Gonzales, Heap and maybe Clark. If you're top 5 at your position i think you're allowed to be somewhat of a dick to a certian level. I always loved Deion, he could back it up. Shockey is gonna get there this year and it's gonna be entertaining.

So you're saying you wouldn't draft Antonio Gates?

Jeremy Shockey Passes Asshole Torch To Kellen Winslow Jr.
ALBANY, NY--In a ceremony held at the New York Giants training camp facility in Albany, New York, tight end Jeremy Shockey officially passed the asshole torch to rookie tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. The brief ceremony marked the changing of the guard for asshole tight ends out of the University of Miami.
“You are the chosen one now,” said Shockey as he handed the symbolic torch to his colleague. “I hope you’re a worthy candidate for this important position. Go forth and be a complete asshole. I believe in you.”
As Winslow Jr. accepted the title, he vowed to carry the torch with dignity, pride, and respect.
“Being the NFL’s biggest asshole is something I take very seriously,” said Winslow in sneering, arrogant tone of voice. “Since I am the greatest tight end who ever lived, I expect to be the greatest asshole who ever lived also. Jeremy has done a great job thus far, but it’s time for a changing of the guard. Move over, Jeremy. There’s a new sheriff in town.”
Shockey has been the NFL’s resident prick for the past two years. As a rookie draft pick of the Giants in 2002, he made a splash with his brash personality, short temper, and big mouth. His star diminished, however, after he suffered an injury last year, which hampered his abilities and curbed his famous arrogance.
Enter Kellen Winslow Jr., another University of Miami product, who possesses may of the same qualities as Shockey and is poised to be the next big asshole in the NFL.
“I used to think there would never be a bigger asshole than me,” said Shockey. “But I have to give credit where credit is due. With me, at least there was a slight hint that I didn’t take myself entirely seriously. But this guy really does think he’s some kind of gladiator or something. I just hope he’s ready for the challenge. Being the league’s biggest asshole isn’t as easy as it sounds. After all, we’ve got Ray Lewis, Warren Sapp, and Terrell Owens. It’s like an asshole all-star team.”
Winslow has already impressed some with his ability to be a complete dickhead. Last year, after a game with the Miami Hurricanes, he went on a boorish and arrogant rant, in which he referred to himself in the third person several times and compared playing college football with being a soldier at war. The long diatribe, as embarrassing as it was, cemented his reputation as an asshole to be reckoned with.
“That speech right there totally blew my mind,” said Shockey. “I was like ‘What a total dipshit asshole that guy is.’ He reminded me of myself when I was his age, before I was humbled by the brutal grind of life in the NFL. In a couple of years, his spirits will be broken, too, and he’ll pass the torch onto some other rookie. Anyone wanna bet that he’s from Miami?”
Adding to his asshole resume, Winslow hired the Poston brothers to represent him. The Poston brothers, appropriately enough, are considered to be the biggest assholes in the world of sports management--no small feat for a world that boasts so many corrupt, immoral pricks.
“Hiring the Poston brothers was a big priority for me,” said Winslow. “If you want to be considered an asshole in the world of sports, you’ve got to get the Postons. Those guys wouldn’t give a dime to save a baby’s life. They’ll pick a GM up by his legs, hold him upside down, and shake all the change out of his pockets. Then they’ll kick him in the face and roll him into traffic. Of course, I don’t mean that literally—unless we’re talking about that guy from St. Louis. Poor bastard just wanted to negotiate.”
Not surprisingly, the Poston brothers have rejected the Browns initial offer, an offer that would’ve made
Winslow one of the highest paid tight ends in history. Winslow is now poised to sit out training camp until his demands are met.
When Shockey got wind of the impending holdout, he knew his days as the NFL’s premier asshole had come to a close.
“Wow, that’s the worst thing I’ve ever heard,” said Shockey. “Imagine a rookie turning down a contract that would’ve paid him more money than Tony Gonzalez, the highest paid tight end in the league. That’s crazy, it’s stupid, it’s arrogant, and it’s beautiful. This guy’s amazing. I just hope he’s tough, though, because he’s going to get the shit kicked out of him on the field.”
Winslow scoffed at the notion that he would be pushed around on the playing field. He pointed out that he is a “tough motherfucker” and that anyone who gets in his way better “back the fuck off.”
“Nobody’s gonna be pushing me around when I get out there. Nobody,” said Winslow. “It’s war out there, motherfucker, and I ain't playing around. Anyone want a piece of me they can come and get it, because I’m ready for battle motherfucker. You don’t become this much of an asshole by being a pussy.”
Some of the league’s defensemen have expressed a deep desire to injure Winslow on the gridiron. Enforcers like Ray Lewis, Brian Urlacher, and Michael Strahan all vowed to pummel the young tight end until he suffers a career-ending injury, or dies outright.
“Well well well. If it isn’t Mr. Kellen Winslow Jr.,” said Ray Lewis, hard-hitting Baltimore linebacker. “First of all, don’t be crowning yourself asshole of the league without checking with me first. Nobody’s a bigger dickhead than me. Nobody. Secondly, you want a war? This ain't the NCAA, motherfucker. It’s the NFL. I’m not even gonna wait for you to get the damn ball. Hell, I’m not even gonna wait for you to take the field. The minute I lay eyes on you, motherfucker, I’m gonna slam your head against my knee, slap your around, and make you my bitch. Remember, I’m from Miami, too.”

Per one league source, Herm Edwards has no control over his team -- and it showed on Saturday.
"The jets act like they just won the Super Bowl," said the source. "All they are is a bunch of f--king thugs. [There's] no discipline in that team at all. . . . And [Edwards] acts like he is some sort of preacher. He is a f--king phony."

What a joke. Since Herm took over the Jets are the least penalized team in the league and have the best turnover ratio.

so some no-name rookie takes a cheap shot at Shockey, and he's somehow the bad guy here?
Shockey needs to shut up and his act can grow tiresome, but I don't see how he was wrong here.

Being "shoved in the back" is hardly a cheap shot
