Big-Breasted Mermaid Statue Causes Splash

POSTED: 3:44 pm EDT August 10, 2005

WELLINGTON, Fla. -- A mermaid statue called "The Siren" is sounding alarms across the village of Wellington.

Some say the statue, which stands in front of the community center, is simply too sexy. People are taking issue with the size of the statue's breasts and want it taken down.

"That, to me, would be like saying some woman's boobs are too big to be here at the community center," said the statue's creator, Norm Gitzen. "We can't do that -- that's discrimination."

Council members agreed with the sculptor and The Siren will stay right where she is.

Just build a statue of a mythological male sea creature with a huge johnson, problem solved.

Would it be more or less offensive if she was a big fattie?

If the creator of the statue can't even make up an artistically legitimate reason, but instead resorts to a really lame joke...it's probably a testament to the validity of his art.

Oh and if i lived there, i would so get someone to take a picture of me licking the nips.

that statue looks all wrong on so many levels, but I can't think of one valid reason for it to be removed.

and i think the creator of this statue has some oral retenetive issues to work out...

less offensive. big girls have big boobs. the proportions are just all wrong on that mermaid statue...it offends my artist's eye way more than my feminist sensibilities.

I agree with genexgirl (kiddo?)

a more normally proportioned statue is always going to look more appealing to me. I would prefer the larger woman statue for a community center.

I know artistically there is nothing wrong with the statue the way it is, but it is the kind of thing that seems to belong more in an art gallery or museum or something than in front of a community center.

But then again, maybe this statue IS proportionately correct in the mermaid world.. for all we know, mermaids died out because their big ole boobies were getting caught in nets, or attracting sharks or some such nonsense.

besides, those boobs would be too bouyant (sp?)...she'd never be able to submerge to live with the other merpeople.

Just because they're not your proportions doesnt mean they're wrong proportions. And how do you know what the proper proportions of a mermaid should be? Do you know one?

Wow. We must be magic or something. We all looked at the picture of the statue and none of our brains exploded. It's a statue. They're just boobs. We all have them. Lighten up, people.

why does anyone need to lighten up? noone said they were offended or appalled, or writing to their congressman to get the statue removed. We just said it looked "off" or were making silly jokes.. I personally am more creeped out by the webbed hands than by the boobs, but whatever. it is just an unusual rendering to see at a community center. a little out of the box .

If a mermaid is supposed to be half person and half fish, then we can extrapolate that since fish have NO boobs, and humans don't have boobs that big for their body size, then the proportions are off on the mermaid as well.

and yes, we know that you're skinny and you have big boobs, but they aren't that big. no ones are unless they're fake (or maybe there's been a big boom in underwater mermaid breast augmentation recently?). at least not in my observation, and believe me, I"ve seen a lot.

by "wrong" i meant "jarring to the eye in an artistic sense". if this mermaid had a head that was way too big, i'd be making the same commentary.

i don't give a shit about the fact that the out of proportion body part is boobs. i was merely pointing out that the flow of the statue's visual appeal was disrupted by this proportional oddity.
