WASHINGTON, Aug. 10 - A four-star general who was relieved of command this week said Wednesday through his lawyer that the Army took the action after an investigation into accusations that he was involved in a consensual relationship with a female civilian.
The lawyer, Lt. Col. David H. Robertson, said the case "involves an adult relationship with a woman who is not in the military, nor is a civilian employee of the military or the federal government."
The general, Kevin P. Byrnes, was relieved Monday by the Army chief of staff, Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker, just a few months before General Byrnes was scheduled to retire as head of the Army Training and Doctrine Command
.
It doesn't even matter that he was seperated from his wife and in divorce proceedings and if someone cheats it shouldn't matter anyway. I am so glad our countries has its priorities straight.
Torture = good
BJ's = bad
War = good
Adultery = bad
hold up: you can be relieved of duty for having a personal affair with a civilian?
that makes no sense whatsoever.
but i guess i am not surprised.

You guys have absolutely no idea how enormous the problem of adultery is within the military do you? Adultary, divorce, things of that nature...it's huge, and it has far reaching detrimental effects within the military itself. It has an huge effect on moral, and that sort of stuff. That is why adultery is not accepted at any level within the military. Especially officers who are heald to higher level.
But I really loved the idea that nobody's been relieved of command because of the torture. Yeah, okay, way to keep with the times...
All kinds of officers have been relieved of their command because of that whole mess. Even officers that were thousands of miles away from Iraq.

How eloquent. You have articulated a lucid argument. Proceed.

Well, I'm not being melodramatic about anything. It is an enormous problem. Look up the stats on divorce rates within the military. And as someone said, imagine going through divorce proceedings while you're in a combat zone? How can our military function when some 15-20% of the people dodging bullets are thinking about Suzy robbing him blind back home? It's a huge slab of people within the military you're looking at. And when their thinking about home, and not thinking about issues on the groud, you have serious problems.
Look up some articles on it. It's one of the biggest issues discussed within military circles right now.

Ok, name some high ranking officers that have been relieved of command for the torture inflicted on prisoners at Abu Garib? If one accepts that soldiers only act (or should act) on orders from above, than how many generals or other high ranking officiers have been punished? This is an honest question because the only people I can think of are that England chick and Karpinski and I don't know how high ranking they are (or were)
I agree that adultery is a problem for morale but I am struck by how quickly this general was canned when torture seems to be a huge problem too (and I am sure it is against all kind of military regulations too)
