wouldn't it be interesting to float a trial balloon and see how the returns from a private retirement account would compare to those offered by the social security program?

well, thanks to congressional incompetence, a loophole allowed the residents in galveston, texas to opt out of social security. in its place, they instituted a private plan. unfortunately, congress filled in this escape hole in 1983 and no such loopholes now exist. oh well.

here is the article, and the numbers.

Very interesting, and I've never heard of this. Privatizing social security just makes complete sense to me, and now even moreso with those numbers. What are the major arguements against it, because I've never really heard a good one? I know that secuirty of the investment is the main issue, but I have much more confidence in money going into the economy, which has consistantly grown thoughout history, then a giant fund that probably won't even be around when I want to retire.
