Wax Head of Mozart Is Stolen From Museum

Sat Aug 27, 3:11 PM ET

VIENNA, Austria - Thieves snatched the head of a life-size Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wax figure from a Salzburg museum, police said Saturday.

The figure of the composer was on display at "Next to Mozart," a multimedia museum that opened last year. The wax head has an estimated value of $18,427, but museum employees told Austria Press Agency the work was truly unique — and appealed for its return.

"It must have happened between 8 p.m. Friday, when we closed, and today before 9 a.m.," museum employee Elisabeth Stoeckl told APA. "When we opened up again, Mozart's head was gone."

The Mozart figure was on the museum's fourth floor.

"It stands just next to the wax figure of Herbert von Karajan," Stoeckl said, referring to one of the great conductors of the 20th century.

Well personally I wouldn't sell it or anything, I'd just keep it, and make creepy home movies with it. Like that King dude that Burger King are using again, his face is just creepy man... it'd be like that, cept Mozzy's wax face.

When you steal art like this, what do you hope to do with it? Like when "The Scream" was taken.. what's the point?

I think there's a big underground market for stuff like this. Offer it to some rich guy for like 1/10th of it's value, and you make a killing. Then he keeps it in his underground dungeon a la Mr. Burns

I guess it's purely an ego-based crime, then. Why do you need the actual painting all to yourself? Art is for all and blah blah blah. Buy a reproduction on a poster and save yourself time AND money.

I think another thing that criminals do is have these stolen works of art at hand in order to use as barganing chips if they ever get caught for anything major.

"Sure, I stole a buch of money & killed a few people, but I might be willing to tell you where "the Scream" is being kept if you agree to let me go...."

In Lois and Clark (just got the season1 dvd and i'm becoming re obsessed) Lex Luthor had an entire bunker under the Metropolis museum of art full of this kind of stuff. Even the missing arms of the Venus DiMilo. (I know i butchered that.)

But seriously, for the most part, stealing high profile art like this, unless you're pre-commissioned by a 'Lex Luthor' type himself, is pretty much worthless. Someone's bound to recognise it and turn you in.
