No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with this!
I know it's against everything college teaches you but, i have some shocking news. Black people commit more violent crime than white people. Poor people commit crimes at higher rates than rich people. Anyone who didn't expect poor black communities that have faced centuries of racism to explode into anger & violence at the sight of all the rich white people escaping the city is either stupid or blinded by multiculturalist bulls**t. Someday someone (other than Bill Cosby) is going to have to get the balls to stand up and say it or things will only get worse.
People of different races and different classes react differently because they are different. No amount of cultural relativism or affirmative action is going to change this. Slavery changed the genetics in a huge portion of the population for the worse. This has had long standing ramifications and we are seeing a real example of it now. I also think that no one can deny that popular black culture glorifies street crime. All the pieces of a disaster are there, and look what happened.

We need to stop being afraid of being called racists and start changing things. The "american taboo" against mentioning these differences is part of the problem. The government should have recognized the demographics and sent in forces to respond accordingly.

let's save this argument for another thread and get back on topic. we're not here to argue race differences and how they play a part in responding, but the emergency response to this disaster.

Sorry, and I didn't mean to offend anyone, I am just sick of hearing about how white people intentionally let people of color suffer. It's scapegoating BS.

I don't think anyone is intentionally ignoring anyone, regardless of color, but if we see a racial disparity in the relief efforts or preparations, I think we'd better damn well feel free to discuss it.

i agree, but i haven't seen that at all. and i don't want to get into an argument about race when we're talking about response. if it comes up, we'll discuss it.
US Salvation Army says food, supplies running out 51 minutes ago
The Salvation Army is running out of food and supplies to help survivors of Hurricane Katrina, and fears "donor fatigue" could put relief efforts at risk, a spokesman for the U.S. aid agency said on Friday.
"We are running out of food, running out of supplies, and are finding it extremely difficult to find food and supplies," Salvation Army spokesman Major George Hood told Reuters from Jackson, Mississippi.
"I don't know how many more days of supplies we have, but it's running out quickly, and the infrastructure is so strangled right now that it's going to be difficult to get fresh supplies in here," he said.
Hood said the Salvation Army was running the largest relief operation in its history to deal with "the most devastating natural disaster that we've seen, probably the worst in the history of this country."
As of Friday morning, the Salvation Army said it had received $21 million in private donations, including $10 million from the Eli Lilly Foundation and $1 million from Wal-Mart. But Hood worried the giving could dry up and undermine relief efforts.
"I am extremely concerned that there will be donor fatigue," he said. "This is the fifth or sixth major disaster in a span of 18 months, and we worry and we pray that the American public will continue to come through."

I often wonder if it isn't equally racist and patronizing for liberals to excuse and overlook what is obviously wrong just because it is being perpetrated by blacks. I am saddened and ashamed at the images of young blacks looting and rampaging like screeching apes unleashed from the zoo. Like Haiti and Liberia my brothers and sistas grinnin' with gluttonous glee and proferring bullshit justification, "Fuck it, I'm gettin' my shit! All the heineken I can carry and a plasma tv too, beeyatch!! You can wonder if the images are slanted and all the white looters have been edited out, you can scream racism and bemoan their poverty and desperation, or call it the fruit of rabid american consumerism, I could argue all of these but the fact remains that the footage of blacks running riot reaffirms the perception of many on the other side of the Bell's curve ( and I imagine secretly some well-meaning progressives as well) that 'niggers' are thieving babboons. I loathe the political climate(Bushco) and the social climate (Christofascism) of this country right now and I am not ignorant to the devices of those that mean us African-americans only ill will. But I can't excuse what these people, MY PEOPLE are doing. The contrast between the black looters in New Orleans and the salt of the earth whites in Miss. was glaring. I weep knowing that they are feeding the poisonous mauw of rush and his ilk, and I weep knowing that many of them couldn't give a damn how it looks. What happened to our dignity? where is our moral shame? The end of the rant is here;...it doesn't do us any good for progressives to tolerate and condone in blacks what they wouldn't condone in their own children. Such a thing makes us little more than pets that poop on the carpet as you wipe it up and pet our wooly heads assuring us "That's alright, D'Juan." God, I hated seeing this shit on tv tonight.

This reminded me of a story that my wife (teacher) told me this week. She said, "I think there is this upper-class pity on my poor black kids that isn't helping them at all."
This lower-income kid was refusing to share something with a middle-class boy. The assistant in the classroom said, "If you can't share, I'm taking it away." At which point, the MC kids parent stepped in, "No, no ... he can just play with it. Johnny doesn't need to play with it." It really felt like the woman's attitude was the rich kid doesn't need to take toys from the poor kids. But that poor kid needs to learn to share. Just because he's from a poor family doesn't mean he doesn't have to learn to share toys.
I can see the poster's point above.

i think this is more a discussion of class/poverty than it is of race - unfortunately, we happen to live in a society (or at least in nola) where the majority of the lower class is of one particular race.

BINGO!
and I dont believe there is any genetic predisposition to violence. Its nurture not nature.
that argument is wrong on so many levels I cant even begin to address it.
I don't think the point of my argument is wrong. Or is the idea of the discussing this wrong? Maybe my justification is weak, but that doesn't invalidate the argument. It's a combination of nature and nuture as all behavior is.

Last night CNN showed a press conference held by the congressional black caucus over the impact the hurricane has had on black people in particular. I can't seem to find a transcript, and it's not likely that it'll be replayed, but boy some of the speeches they made were sobering.

poor is poor
poverty doesn't care about race
I find it absolutely moronic that someone would post that blacks commit more violent crime and not understand that's a problem dealing with poverty and not a result of skin color. I really hope that's not what some iris said

Well, I don't believe that melatonin causes crime. I believe that a lower IQ leads to less economic opportunity (and that usually leads to crime).
I believe that during slavery a process of "unnatural selection" occurred where intelligence was selected against and 'man power' was selected favorably, for hundreds of years. European colonial culture selected in favor of the white male, this is evident today by looking at things like Nobel Prize awards.
If you combine this idea with the increasingly popular theory that lower-IQ women have more babies you start to see a bleak picture for blacks in America (The lower IQ mom theory spans all races BTW). Combine that with a common culture that disparages educational and economic success and it just gets worse. It's a miracle anyone can struggle to get out of the urban ghetto.
So no, I don't think being black causes you to be a criminal. But I do think that blacks in America have the "deck stacked against them" and are more likely to commit a crime because of it.
If you feel otherwise, I respect that, and would like to hear your viewpoint.
This guy who wrote this article is brilliant. I've heard him on NPR, and he is a young (28 I think) black economist at Harvard and is saying things that nobody else dares to say because of political correctness. His stuff is truly groundbreaking.

and elected officials do not do a whole helluva lot to remedy the problem.
