i'm working on a paper about whitman, and while doing research, i came across this in some cliff notes:
The purple color of the lilac, indicating the passion of the Crucifixion, is highly suggestive of the violence of Lincoln’s death.
i cannot cite cliff notes in my paper, and i'd like to know where they came up with this idea. i've tried searching out some information on the crucifixion, but i haven't found any mention of the colour purple.
if anyone can help me find a mention of it somewhere, i'd love them forever.

I think the curtain that was torn when the earth split inthe temple at the time of christ's death was purple. I'm not positive though, and that's the only reference of purple that I can think of that has to do with the crucifixion.

i'm rather underprepared when it comes to scouring the bible for things of this nature.

What about the candles of the Advent wreath? Three purple candles and one pink. I believe the purple candles represent Christ. Maybe you can use this as a point of reference for further research?

Quote:
3. The Crowning with Thorns
Christ Jesus becomes an object of derision and insults at the hands of the temple servants. Behold Him, the all-powerful God, struck by sharp blows; His adorable face, the joy of the saints, is covered with spittle; a crown of thorns is forced down upon His head; a purple robe is placed upon His shoulders as a mock of derision; a reed is thrust into His hand; the servants genuflect insolently before Him in mockery. What an abyss of ignominy! What humiliation and disgrace for One before Whom the angels tremble!
