i'm working on a paper about whitman, and while doing research, i came across this in some cliff notes:

The purple color of the lilac, indicating the passion of the Crucifixion, is highly suggestive of the violence of Lincoln’s death.

i cannot cite cliff notes in my paper, and i'd like to know where they came up with this idea. i've tried searching out some information on the crucifixion, but i haven't found any mention of the colour purple.

if anyone can help me find a mention of it somewhere, i'd love them forever.

I think the curtain that was torn when the earth split inthe temple at the time of christ's death was purple. I'm not positive though, and that's the only reference of purple that I can think of that has to do with the crucifixion.

okay. well, where can i find a reference to that?

i'm rather underprepared when it comes to scouring the bible for things of this nature.

What about the candles of the Advent wreath? Three purple candles and one pink. I believe the purple candles represent Christ. Maybe you can use this as a point of reference for further research?

numbers 4:13 They shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth over it

do i have anything with that one? is that too early to be in reference to the death of christ?

Mark 15:17 - And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,

Mark 15:20 - And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.

John 19:2 - And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,

John 19:5 - Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

I haven't checked these...just took for granted that bible.com wouldn't lie to me.

I think whoever linked it with Lincoln was smoking crack....purple crack.
