Now, I've not heard a ton of Neil Young, but I seriously think this album is brilliant. I really do not understand the flack it gets. Can anyone explain this to me? I think "I'm The Ocean" is possibly my favorite Neil song. I've heard his major albums like After The Goldrush and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, and there is no denying their amazing-ness.

Show yr luurve for Mirrorball. C'mon, it's great.
I think the flack it gets is largely relative to the rest of Neil's, and Pearl Jam's, catalogues. It's not nearly either of their best works. However, I still think it's pretty great, I'm The Ocean is wonderful song, and overall I think it features some of Neil's best lyrics of the 90's, if not his best music.

It was one of two albums that got me into neil. Mirrorball and Sleeps with Angels...odd pair to get into him...anyways. I loved just how grungey it was and how it just all flowed together. I mean i guess its not nearly as musically brilliant as cowgirl or others, but the lyrics are standout and its so underrated.
a lot of pure neil rusties seem to greatly distaste the album but pearl jam, neil young fans like it...its odd.
I'd rank it around the middle of his works. I think everybody konws this is nowhere and goldrush are far better than mirrorball, but thats just me.
the one main attraction to mirrorball for me was, there is no filler.

I never understood the slack the album got either. I think its way up there with Neil's best. I don't think there is a weak track on it and Neil has tons of albums and there are a great share of weak tracks, but every song on this especially SongX, I'm The Ocean, Big Green Country, Peace and Love are really catchy. Jack Irons and Jeff Ament really help it sound good too- way better rythm section than Crazy Horse imho. My only complaint is the song fragments of melodies from other songs.

you have not listened to enough crazy horse my friend.
I don't think its up there with his best personally. Its very consistent, but its not a masterpiece...just me.
The "slack" it got stemmed from a lot of people thinking it was just like messy and nothing special, people thought the lyrics to peace and love, especially eddie's contribution, sucked....and they were overdone and cheesy and pretentious.
I think a lot of pure neil fans hated this album because, i don't know why people think this, but it seems like so many people mark off ed as super pretentious and thats why lots of people didn't like it. Everybody here knows ed is as geniune as it gets and even neil has admitted he's one of the most geniuine people he knows, but meh. Some people just don't get satisfied.
consistent neil albums...hmm
i think greendale is more consistent and if you want to include year of the horse...well that blows mirrorball out of the water.

Neil fans give Mirror Ball a hard time only because the album WASN'T done with Crazy Horse and most hardcore Neil fans only get a boner when Neil is with the Horse!
Personally I think Mirror Ball is one of Neil's best albums. It's rock solid. Pearl Jam adds energy and pep to the music. Too often on Neil records there's some clunkers and then one or two REALLY AMAZING songs. But on Mirror Ball, the whole thing just rocks. While Peace and Love or Act of Love may not be Cortez the Killer or Cowgirl in the Sand, they are still great songs and it's one of my favorite Neil records to play.
