WHITE PLAINS, New York (AP) -- A man who caught fire Tuesday in a car crash on a bridge jumped into the Hudson River, then was rescued and taken to a hospital, officials said.
Another man was killed in the crash, which shut down the Tappan Zee Bridge for hours before and during the evening rush. Traffic backed up for miles on Interstates 87 and 287.
Susan Tolchin, chief adviser to Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano, said emergency workers told her the man who jumped was a passenger in a car that had become disabled on the bridge.
A tractor-trailer hit the car from behind, causing a fire that killed the car's driver, she said. The passenger then jumped into the Hudson.
The bridge deck varies in height, and it was unknown how far the man jumped.
He was rescued by bridge workers and firefighters.
State police identified the driver as Angel Norales, 41. They said passenger Escolastico Arzu, 44, was hospitalized in stable condition.

Thats what I was thinking. The lower parts are basically just off the water, but regardless of where he jumped from, that is still pretty badass that he was on fire and jumped off the bridge and lived to tell the tale. That must have been a horrible traffic backup, because its a bitch to get over that bridge any time of day.

Yes, it does. The entire west mile to mile and a half of the bridge is high enough for a ski boat to go under, but not much more. The high part of the span is about 100 feet or more off the river.

The bridge is over 2.5 miles across. They made the high part high enough for tall ships to pass, but the rest was far cheaper and easier to build low, like a causeway.

it was built tall because the Hudson used to be a major shipping route to upstate New York. Add in the Erie Canal and there you go. Though it doesn't see as much traffic as it use to, you still see some big boats on it from time to time.
